Medical marijuana company in Truro buying land to build facility

A medical marijuana company in Truro, N.S., says it has received security approvals from Health Canada and is moving ahead with plans to build a facility approximately 17,000 square feet in size.

On Monday, The Truro Herbal Company, or The THC, will officially acquire 2.5 hectares of land in the town's industrial park, says president Evan Price. He says the company was waiting for Health Canada to finish security checks before finalizing the land transfer.

The company plans to build a two-storey facility with 6.7-metre ceilings.

"You have to build basically a bank that's wrapped in a jail," Price said.

After submitting a proposal more than 2,000 pages long, the company received Stage 3 approval from the federal government this week, he says.

Babies exposed to marijuana in the womb have better visual skills, UW research shows

Children who were exposed to marijuana in the womb have better vision by the time they are four years old, a new study has revealed.

But, scientists were quick to warn the results do not mean cannabis has a beneficial effect on foetal development.

The team from the University of Waterloo, Auckland and Brown University, admitted they were surprised at their findings, which show the drug can improve a child's ability to track moving objects in their line of sight.

Professor Ben Thompson, at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, said: 'We were surprised with this initial finding.

Clinical study at CAMH tests how cannabis affects volunteers’ driving skills

There are two kinds of buzzed people who take the wheel of his simulated Chevy in the basement of a CAMH building, Dr. Robert Mann observes: those who drive cautiously and those who let ’er rip.

The scientist with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health points to the flat-screen TVs that serve as the “windshield” for the extracted cab of a Chevrolet compact — complete with steering wheel, dashboard, gear shift and pedals — and explains the clinical study he’s been working on since 2013.

Halifax cannabis clinic provides support for patients and doctors

A new Halifax clinic is helping patients and their doctors navigate the sometimes complicated medical and legal grounds for cannabis-based treatments.

"The thing is most GPs and specialists aren't very comfortable writing prescriptions for cannabis. We will actually take that over," said Dr. Danial Schedcter, medical director of Canabanoid Medical Clinic, which also has a location in Toronto.

"We will walk them through the steps."

There is no fee to see a physician at clinic, although a doctor's referral is required.

The clinic is not a dispensary, Schedcter told CBC's Information Morning.

The only legal way to obtain medical marijuana is by mail through a a licensed producer approved by Health Canada, he said.

Ontario makes U-turn on day-old medical marijuana rule

Ontario’s plan to allow vaping and smoking of medical marijuana anywhere, anytime is going back to the drawing board after a public backlash suggested it was one toke over the line.

Associate Health Minister Dipika Damerla quickly reversed course Thursday over concerns about exposure to second-hand cannabis smoke in restaurants, theatres, offices and other public spaces where tobacco smoking is banned.

“We will consider this feedback, look at it very carefully and see what we need to do,” she told reporters.

Courier delivery model could speed up recreational access to marijuana, says CEO of Tweed

The CEO of one of Canada's licensed medical cannabis producers says a delivery-by-courier model would be a good first step as the new Liberal government looks to allow recreational access to the drug.

"I think there may be an interim opportunity for distribution to happen quickly, to show a milestone of achieving things, because milestones in politics seem to be important," Bruce Linton, CEO and chairman of Canopy Growth Corp. (TSXV:CGC) said during the company's second-quarter earnings call Thursday.

"If the feds wish to have limited recreational access by way of direct courier, and then evolve it into presentation into LCBOs or SAQs or wherever, that could be something that could happen, and certainly we are actively, actively advocating that kind of first step."
