As Canadians across the country line up to do their civic duty and vote in the Federal election, voters in two Ontario ridings will have the option to show their enthusiasm for marijuana.

Cannabis edibles expected to take small bite out of illegal sales

Licensed cannabis producers are optimistic that the introduction of legal edibles will help displace the black market, but analysts say it will take time to displace illegal sales.

Edmonton-based cannabis producer Aurora is launching a line of edibles that include chocolates, gummies and vaping products.

The company has submitted its products to Health Canada for approval and could begin selling them as of mid-December.

Canadians are purchasing edibles from the black market because they're interested in alternative ways of getting high, said Aurora chief corporate officer Cam Battley.

He thinks many of those consumers will migrate to the legal market in search of safer products that are properly dosed.

Road Trip: Cannabis edibles may avoid detection in drug tests, toxicologist says

As the RCMP and local police across Canada deal with rising drug-impaired driving rates and prepare for even more with the legalization of new cannabis products, edibles may not be detected in oral fluid testing.

James Wigmore, a forensic toxicologist who specializes on the effects of drinking and using cannabis, said the science behind it may also explain why edibles can cause more psychoactive effects in some users.

“When smoking, you don’t get the intermediate metabolite … the cannabis goes into your lungs and avoids the liver,” he said in a phone interview.

The intermediate metabolite he’s referring to is 11-hydroxy THC.

‘It's messy’: How investors can play the legalization of cannabis edibles

The new wave of cannabis legalization in Canada was met with optimism from investors on Thursday, but analysts warn it’s still too early to bet on the market’s rejuvenation.

Trapped in a bear market for months, cannabis stocks flashed some of their old potential as market leaders such as Canopy Growth Corp., OrganiGram Holdings Inc., MediPharm Labs Corp., Cronos Group Inc. and Aurora Cannabis Inc. each closed between five and eight per cent up. Hexo Corp., which was battered last week after significantly lowering guidance, gained nearly 20 per cent to close at $3.81.

It's never clean from the beginning. There's going to be a lot of starts and stops for the next two to three quarters
