Delta cannabis operations to utilize millions of square feet

A large-scale greenhouse, that’s made the switch to cannabis, is finally entering the market with its first harvest.

AgraFlora Organics International Inc. has a partnership with the huge Houweling Nurseries complex on 64th Street, an operation called Propagation Services Canada.

Greenhouse owner Ruben Houweling and CEO Elise Coppens this week on Twitter proudly pictured themselves in the drying room at the Delta facility, saying the operation’s first harvest is complete.

The venture will see the eventual conversion of the entire 2.2-million-square-foot greenhouse facility, which is located in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Did the B.C. heat wave offer a bumper crop for cannabis?

B.C.'s heat wave saw cannabis crops thrive.

At least according to Tyler Bigattini, the master grower at Potanicals Green Growers Inc. in Peachland. He says plants cultivated in the company's greenhouse or those outdoors have taken off since last week’s blistering temperatures swept through the region. 

“We hit like 45, 46 C last week,” he says. “You can use it to your advantage and use a little more CO2.”

A recent report conducted by the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR) at UVic looked at sales data between 2018-2020, from wholesalers, private retailers and B.C. Cannabis stores (in-person and online).

Vancouver making headway on recreational cannabis sales

It appears recreational cannabis sales in Vancouver are heading in a better direction, reportedly representing one of the top Canadian cities in April and contributing to record sales for the entire country.

Cannabis sales in Vancouver were reported to be $16.7 million, up about 30 per cent from March, according to Marijuana Business Daily.

BC legal cannabis sales grow briskly: report

Cannabis products in BC are getting cheaper and more potent, and its year-over-year sales have doubled between 2019 and 2020, according to a new report from the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR). In 2020, sales added up to nearly 8,000 kg of THC—equivalent to approximately 400 million joints (at 20mg of THC each) and accounted for about $290 million in gross revenue.

Vancouver cannabis store ordered to pay Subway $40,000 for name infringement

Budway — an unlicensed cannabis retail store in East Vancouver — has been ordered to pay fast-food giant Subway $40,000 for trademark infringement and damages.

According to a Federal Court of Canada ruling, the store’s name and signage were too close to that of Subway and the use of a mascot in the shape of a subway sandwich filled with cannabis leaves and with bloodshot eyes damaged the U.S. company’s reputation.
