Medical Marijuana Supporters Head to Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Support for cannabis in Florida seems to be burning brighter, and an eclectic group of advocates took to the Capitol today to make sure a possible new law in 2015 doesn't go up in smoke.

They came from all parts of the state and headed to the 22nd floor of the Capitol, the highest place you can get in Tallahassee. There were the seniors, the veterans, the drug smugglers, and the guy who needs service dogs for his injuries. All in support of medical cannabis.

Jeff Clemens first filed a marijuana bill four years ago.

“The people are either supporting family members or their own ability to be able to treat their illnesses the way they see fit,” said Sen. Clemens (D-Lake Worth).

Pediatricians Urge DEA to Reclassify Medical Marijuana to Boost Research

For the first time, the American Academy of Pediatrics is recommending the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency reclassify marijuana so that more research can be conducted in the hopes of finding benefits for children. The influential medical society also proposes that marijuana should be made available on a compassionate use basis for children with debilitating or life-threatening illnesses.

Specifically, the AAP wants marijuana to be removed from the DEA’s Schedule 1 listing for controlled substances, which are not considered to have any “currently accepted medical use in the U.S., a lack of accepted safety for under medical supervision and a high potential for abuse.” Other drugs in this category include heroin, acid and ecstasy.

February 6, 2015

By John Schroyer

The cannabis industry has been abuzz since Illinois unexpectedly issued 70 business permits to medical marijuana companies earlier this week, allaying concerns that the licensing process would be delayed indefinitely.

“I’ve got phone calls coming in almost 24/7 now,” said Joseph Friedman, chief operations officer at PDI Medical, which was awarded a dispensary license. “It’s been a very exciting 48 to 72 hours since we got notice. I’m working day and night to make this thing happen.”

20 Applicants, Including Rapper, Win Dispensary Licenses in Santa Ana

February 6, 2015

The city of Santa Ana, California, has awarded 20 dispensary licenses, including one to Cypress Hill rapper Louis Freese, better known by his stage name B-Real.

The move comes just two months after voters approved a measure legalizing and taxing MMJ, which will make Santa Ana the first city in Orange County to have legal dispensaries, according to the Orange County Register. Most cities in the area have banned MMJ businesses.

More than 600 applications were submitted, each one accompanied by a check for $1,690. Applicants awarded permits will now have to submit to a background check that will cost another $12,000.

Large Phoenix MMJ Grow Wins Go-Ahead

February 9, 2015

A company has received the green light to build a 20-acre indoor medical marijuana cultivation facility within 1,000 feet of a neighborhood in Phoenix, which is technically not allowed under a local ordinance.

The city’s Board of Adjustment voted 3-2 to grant Tryke Companies an exception to the ordinance – which stipulates that cannabis grows be at least 1,000 feet from neighborhoods – despite resistance from nearby residents.

The approval is another sign that local government officials in Arizona are finally warming to the upside of the cannabis industry.
