Doctors are advised to prescribe cannabis over opioids for nerve pain

Physicians who prescribe opioid drugs to patients with neuropathy (nerve pain) should consider recommending canna­bis as a therapy, according to a peer-reviewed paper published online in the January 2012 Harm Reduction Journal.* “There is sufficient evidence of safety and efficacy for the use of (cannabis/ cannabinoids) in the treatment of nerve pain relative to opioids,” the paper states. “In States where medicinal cannabis is legal, physicians who treat neuropathic pain with opioids should evaluate their patients for a trial of cannabis and prescribe it when appropriate prior to using opioids.

Marijuana caution

RECENT events in the news locally hint at a significant use of illicit marijuana by university students, a topic likely to be raised now by anxious parents with their youngsters in households across the country.

We think it is an apt time to sound a note of caution as to the drug’s harmful effects. At present, Trinidad and Tobago, like much of the rest of the world, faces a very confused picture as to how the drug should be viewed.

It is still illegal in most countries including ours, but has been decriminalised in places such as Uruguay and the State of Colorado and Washington DC. Even as in Europe some police forces now merely warn but not prosecute users.

Croatia medics back legalizing medical marijuana

A medical expert commission has advised the Croatian government to change the law in order to enable marijuana to be used for medical purposes.

An expert commission formed in the Croatian health ministry in December has decided that usage of marijuana for medical purposes should be legalised.
