Medical marijuana operation could bring 100 jobs to Saugerties, town supervisor says

AUGERTIES >> A proposed medical marijuana growing operation could bring 100 jobs to a site just south of the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Old Kings Highway, according to town Supervisor Greg Helsmoortel.

Helsmoortel said Monday that the proposal, by a company called New York Growing Partners, envisions a facility to grow medical marijuana. He said it is unrelated to a previous proposal by a company called Canna Care LLC. “They’re out of the picture now,” he said.

The proposed 12-acre site of the operation, known as the John Mullen shovel-ready site, already has gone through most of the planning process, including water, sewer, archaeological and environmental reviews, Helsmoortel said.

SC mom legally making and selling strain of medical marijuana

South Carolina - We can't tell you where in South Carolina we are reporting this story. It's down a dirt road, near horses and smack in the middle of a large field.

“I'm building my company here,” Janel Ralph says. “I think it'll be up and running in maybe six months.” She laughs, “But I'm an optimist. I guess I can't say exactly on the timeline.”

Janel Ralph's company is called Palmetto Synergistic Research. She'll be manufacturing hemp cannabis, legally, in South Carolina. She's cultivating them to have specific genetics. What she's making will be high in CBD – the part of the plant that is calming – and to have very little to no THC - the part of the plant that gives you that euphoric “high” feeling.

New synthetic marijuana hits the streets, hospitalizes teen for 11 days

There's a brand new synthetic marijuana hitting the streets and it is completely different than anything the experts have seen in the past.

An 18-year-old from Granite City who smoked it and ended up in the hospital. The teen's mother, Onashay Haeffner, describes the day she found her son after he overdosed.

"He was drawled up on the couch like a 3-year-old. He wouldn't talk to me, was slobbering, and was crying really easy," she said.

Soon Onashay's son had a 106 degree fever and was having seizures, but that was tame compared to what hospital tests revealed.

"They rushed him here with renal failure and 85 percent of his muscle mass in his legs had been gone," Onashay said.

5 ways cannabis products could be good for your skin

Could cannabis be the next big beauty trend? Well, it’s now being used in a range of produces available at the UK’s first pharmacy.

Carun Pharmacy’s offering includes everything hemp from mouthwash to pasta – but they won’t get you high as they are all made from non-psychotropic ingredients.

Cannabis sativa extract, also known as hemp seed oil, is the magic ingredient used in the products. It contains a compound called cannabinoids, the most well known of which is Tetrahydrocannabinol (responsible for the psychoactive effects of the drug) but Carun’s hemp products only contain 0.3% of this, while marijuana apparently contains 20-38%.

Gov. Wolf: Decriminalize marijuana - 'It's ripping families apart'

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf told Channel 11’s Cara Sapida on Tuesday that he thinks marijuana should be decriminalized.

“There are a lot of reasons to look at decriminalization. I think that’s something that I support," he said.

Wolf said the drug is ripping families apart.

“I believe, for a number of reasons, that we ought to decriminalize marijuana use. I think our prisons are over-crowded as a result of people going to jail for reasons that, you know, we break up families for reasons that we shouldn’t," Wolf said.

“We destroy lives and we make it hard to find employment. So often right now possession of a small amount is a felony and an employer looks at that and dismisses (the person) automatically.”

Let's legalize and tax marijuana to help pay for Michigan roads, schools, police

It's no secret that Michigan has a problem finding enough money to invest in critical priorities like roads, education and public safety. The costs of providing a good education to our kids, fixing our roads and providing even basic services to residents continue to climb.

Taxpayers have made it clear in the voting booth that they are skeptical about forking over more of their hard-earned money until they know the Legislature has asked corporations to pay their fair share and looked to alternative options to generate significant revenue. What we need are consistent, permanent revenue solutions that don't simply raise taxes on middle-class, working families.
