Dan Humiston: Creating the International Cannabis Association

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dan Humiston, founder and president of the International Cannabis Association, who represents a large demographic of hopeful entrants to the cannabis industry. While there are plenty of people across the U.S. who are looking to transition from a black market cannabis career to owning a regulated business in the legal industry, there is also much interest from people who see cannabis purely as a business opportunity and who may have never grown–or even consumed–it themselves.

In this interview, Dan talks about how he made the choice to transition from his successful career as a business owner to founding a cannabis business association, and what he predicts the future holds for the legalization movement.

Combination Of Medical Cannabis, Opioids Does Not Increase Substance Abuse Risk, Study Finds

With nearly half of the country having already legalized the use of cannabis for medical purposes, physicians prescribing opioids for pain management have another alternative at their disposal. As medical marijuana laws become more relaxed, practitioners now have the option of treating chronic pain patients with prescription opioids, medical cannabis or both. Among many, however, there’s a concern about the adverse effects in patients using both.

WHY CBD IS NOT ENOUGH: THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT

Several states have or are in the process of legalizing cannabis extracts, typically oils, high in cannabidiol (CBD) and very low in THC. Because these medicines lack THC (the cannabinoid in marijuana that produces the euphoric high), conservative politicians have been much more willing to embrace this approach to medical marijuana.

Kearney jumps aboard marijuana legalization train

Cincinnati's influence on the push to legalize marijuana in Ohio this year grew Tuesday when former state Sen. Eric Kearney announced that he will serve as a senior advisor to the ResponsibleOhio campaign.

"The issue of marijuana legalization is one all Ohioans should take seriously," Kearney said in a statement. "As a former legislator, I know that our state government is not ready to act on this important issue. Ohioans are being unjustly punished for using marijuana, while patients do not have access to medical marijuana for treatment. It's time we reform this failed prohibition, and I'm proud to be part of the effort to do so."

Hoosiers crowdfund for marijuana access as neighbor states legalize

INDIANAPOLIS – Jennifer Perkins says she feels like she’s on a roller coaster – even while standing still.

Perkins suffers from tuberous sclerosis, a medical condition that’s left small, potato-shaped tumors all over her body, including her brain and kidneys.

Perkins, who shared copies of her medical records with I-Team 8, believes the tumors might be the source of her frequent dizzy spells and seizures.

Her husband, Aaron, posted videos of Jennifer to the online crowdfunding website GoFundMe. The videos, he says, show Jennifer having seizures in their Indianapolis home.

Arizona's second drive launched on recreational marijuana use

PHOENIX — A second group launched its own effort Tuesday to legalize marijuana for recreational use in Arizona, potentially putting both campaigns in jeopardy.

The new group, known as the Campaign to Legalize and Regulate Marijuana, filed paperwork Tuesday to start gathering signatures for a proposal to let adults use the drug for recreational use. Backers need 150,642 valid signatures by July 7, 2016, to qualify for the general election ballot that year.

The move comes exactly a month after the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol began its own petition drive to put a similar, but not exactly duplicate, initiative on the 2016 ballot. It also needs the same number of signatures.

And that’s where the first problem arises.

Texas Marijuana Reform Activists Will Try To Improve Limited Medical Marijuana Bill

Texas marijuana reform activists are busy balancing a small victory with the passage of a limited medical marijuana bill with major shortcomings in the law, which allows the use of Cannabidiol oils for the treatment of seizures.

First off, the law doesn't allow the use of whole-plant marijuana. Cannabidiol oil, or CBD oil, is a derivative of marijuana that doesn't cause euphoria. Medical marijuana proponents say whole-plant marijuana treats a wide array of illnesses and ailments and that the plant is more effective as a whole.

But there's another problem — a legal problem.
