Cannabinoid Use in the Management of Gastrointestinal Symptoms

Cannabinoid Use in the Management of Gastrointestinal Symptoms

A review published in Current Gastroenterology Reports in February 2015 discussed the role of cannabinoids in the treatment of gastrointestinal (GI, the system involved in the ingestion and digestion of food, and waste excretion) symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and visceral pain (pain that originates in / around organs) and found that certain cannabinoids targeted therapies may be useful in GI disease / disorder management.

Context: cannabinoid effects on the gastrointestinal tract

The researchers note that modulation of the endocannabinoid system (particularly the cannabinoid receptor type most often found in the gastrointestinal system, known as CB1 receptors) may regulate

Cannabis Spray Treatment Helps 9-Year-Old with Autism Learn to Speak

A controversial cannabis treatment helps boy break his nine-year silence. Could it benefit others, too?

The Short of It

Kalel Santiago, who lives in Puerto Rico, was diagnosed with cancer at 10 months old, and after he was cancer-free at 3 years old, he was diagnosed with severe, non-verbal autism. At age 9, he hadn't spoken his first word—until his parents tried a controversial treatment: Hemp Health, a hemp oil that includes a form of cannabis. Two days later, he was speaking.

The Lowdown

Kalel's parents sprayed the compound cannabidiol (CBD) in the boy's mouth twice per day, and they say the results were astounding.

Switzerland: Medicinal cannabis: Nation ready to open the door

The National Drug Council accepted a motion Tuesday to allow a drug made from cannabis flowers to relieve pain for people with certain diseases.

Switzerland could allow a drug made from cannabis flowers (cannabis flos) to relieve pain for people with multiple sclerosis, cancer and AIDS among others.

By 123 votes against 39, the National Council accepted the Tuesday, June 2  motion of Margrit Kessler (PVL / SG) requesting to study the issue.

In Switzerland, people suffering from chronic pain often prefer to obtain cannabis illegally as licensed therapies are expensive and complicated to obtain, stressed the Vert'libérale.

Controversial Cannabis Treatment Helps 9-Year-Old Boy Speak His First Words

Though Kalel Santiago of Puerto Rico is only 9 years old, he’s already endured some adult-level struggles. At just 10 months, he was diagnosed with the rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma, and spent more than two years undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Then came the next diagnosis: severe, non-verbal autism.

“While he was in the hospital, we noticed he didn’t speak at all and had some behavior that wasn’t right, like hand flapping, and walking on his toes,” his father, Abiel Gomez Santiago, tells Yahoo Parenting from the family’s home in Aguada. “But we waited until he was 3 and cancer-free to look at his behavior.”

Tilray Launches New Industry Association and Code of Ethics for Canadian Medical Cannabis Producers

In an effort to advance the highest standards within Canada’s medical cannabis industry, Tilray has founded a new association, the Canadian Medical Cannabis Council (CMCC), to represent licensed producers and other industry stakeholders who are committed to building long-term trust with patients.

Following several unsuccessful attempts to persuade the Canadian Medical Cannabis Industry Association (CMCIA) to adopt a Code of Ethics that mandates a commitment to safety, transparency and avoidance of conflicts of interest, Tilray has terminated its membership with the CMCIA. While we are disappointed to end this relationship, we feel that the CMCIA and its members have failed to serve the best interests of Canadian patients.

Watch: Autism & Cannabis

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that appears within the first 3 years of life. ASD most commonly affects communication and social skills. The cause of the disorder is not known but is linked to abnormal brain chemistry. Research into the source of ASD is very active though medications have only been developed to deal with the behavioral consequences of the disorder, not the disorder itself.

Judge awards $15-billion to Quebec smokers in landmark case against tobacco giants

In a ruling described as “historic” by one lawyer, a Quebec judge has ordered three major cigarette companies to pay $15 billion to smokers in what is believed to be the biggest class-action lawsuit ever seen in Canada.

“These three companies lied to their customers for 50 years and hurt their right to life,” Andre Lesperance, one of the lawyers involved in the case, said Monday.

“It’s a great victory for victims as well as for society in general.”

For Lise Blais, the judgment was bittersweet.

One of the two lawsuits that eventually merged into one was filed by her husband, Jean-Yves Blais, shortly before he died of lung cancer in September 2012 at the age of 68.

Farmers lodge legal petition for medical marijuana licenses

Farmers are demanding that the government act upon its December 2013 decision and issue additional licenses without delay.

A group of 10 farmers interested in growing medical marijuana recently filed a petition to the Jerusalem District Court, demanding that the Health Ministry increase the licenses available for producing the crop.

Although a government decision was made on the subject in December 2013, officials have still failed to issue licenses for those looking to begin growing cannabis for medical purposes, the farmers argued in their petition.

Because they have not yet been able to join the industry, the farmers said that damage is being caused to themselves, to those patients who may need the marijuana, and to the principle of fair competition.

“Prescribing” Versus “Recommending” Medical Cannabis

The regulation of cannabis for use by certain qualified individuals presents many unique challenges for state governments, particularly in an environment in which federal law considers cannabis illegal — except in the case of rare and typically short-term clinical trials. When it comes to participation of physicians and other members of the medical community, state medical marijuana laws must be carefully crafted to avoid placing them at risk of federal penalties. This is due to the way federal laws regulate controlled substances and the doctors who prescribe them for use as medicine. A “prescription” for the medical use of cannabis is illegal and carries significant penalties for doctors.
