CSA standard for cannabis impairment coming next year

The CSA Group is currently working on a new standard to address cannabis impairment in the workplace, which is scheduled to be released spring 2020, attendees heard at the Partners in Prevention Health and Safety Conference and Trade Show in Mississauga, Ont. on April 30.

Just over six months have passed since cannabis has been legalized in Canada, and there remains limited regulatory guidance or legislative directives for employers and safety professionals to manage the effects of the substance in the workplace, especially in safety sensitive positions. The standard will aim to bridge this knowledge gap.

The expansion is taking place through The Green Organic Dutchman’s (TGOD) subsidiary HemPoland, which was just granted organic certification for European markets in late April.

How medical marijuana use could make one Nova Scotia man homeless

Philip Bennett could soon be homeless.

The 57-year-old is getting kicked out of his apartment building because he smoked and vaped medical marijuana on his balcony.

He uses the marijuana to treat the pain caused by a genetic disorder that's slowly destroying his body. It has already robbed him of his ability to walk long distances.

Outside of his apartment, Bennett requires a motorized wheelchair to get around.

Bennett's landlord wants him out of the apartment building in Dartmouth by May 1, saying that Bennett broke the building's ban on marijuana use and that his smoking caused another tenant to move out.

That's led to a legal fight that questions what right a landlord has to decide the kind of medication a tenant can use.

Health Canada is tackling the marijuana shortage with this game-changing move

Pardon the cliche, but the marijuana industry appears to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Although the cannabis industry has existed for decades behind the scenes, the legalization of recreational weed in Canada, along with more than 40 countries giving medical marijuana the green light around the world, has opened the floodgates for legal revenue to flow into the industry.

But, as is common with any nascent and fast-growing industry, it's dealing with growing pains. This is especially true of our neighbor to the north, Canada.

Medical cannabis users still face challenges accessing prescription medicine

Medical cannabis patients still face too many practical barriers to access in countries where the drug is legal, including Canada, an international panel of advocates and experts at the Business of Cannabis Medical Cannabis conference in Toronto said Wednesday.

Long considered an international leader on medical cannabis, Canada has had a legal framework since 2001.

But with recreational legalization, we started to see two systems, said Gerald Major, president of Canadians for Fair Access to Medical Marijuana, a medical cannabis patient and an arthritis survivor.

Does cannabis make you mellow or manic? A new genetic test may explain why

About a year ago, the head of a cannabis company approached genetic technology expert John Lem with a problem; why did he have an adverse reaction from pot when everyone else who had smoked the same joint seemed fine?

So Lem set out to find whether there was a genetic explanation for the different ways people react to THC, and that's how his Toronto-based company Lobo Genetics was born.

"Looking into the science, we came to the conclusion that there is actually a genetic basis for someone's reaction to THC," said Lem.

Through a simple cheek swab, Lobo Genetics examines three genes to see how your body interacts with THC.

Canadians' support for legal pot dropped in 2019; edibles interest mixed: Survey

Support for recreational cannabis among Canadians has dropped since the drug was legalized last year amid a shaky roll-out of legal pot and a still-robust black market, according to a survey published Thursday.

In a survey conducted by Dalhousie University and the University of Guelph, half of Canadians support the legalization of recreational cannabis, down from about 69 per cent back in 2017. Meanwhile, uncertain sentiment surrounding legalization has grown to 20 per cent of the country, up from about 7 per cent two years ago, the survey found.

Capturing Eden brings access to medical marijuana

Free for guests to enjoy, treats of brownies and cakes sat beside a brew of hemp coffee that had good reviews from visitors. A new curious customer walked in every 20 minutes or so, which was a joy for owner Stephen Barber who celebrated six months of hard work at the weekend opening of Capturing Eden.

“We recognize a need, not only in this community but throughout Canada, in especially under-serviced areas that are similar to Haliburton,” Barber said about the lack of medical marijuana access. “People are waiting long times to get medical assessments, travelling a distance to get them, and to find the right products to help their ailments. We thought this would be a good place to start.”

Medical vs. recreational cannabis: Where should I invest?

It’s an exciting time to be a cannabis investor!

The Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences Index ETF (OTC: HMLSF) is obliterating the broader markets…

Year to date, the exchange-traded fund has more than doubled the performance of tech stocks and blue chips.

But I think its run is far from over. There are plenty of catalysts on the horizon. We have pro-cannabis legislation – like the STATES Act and the SAFE Banking Act – inching its way forward in Congress.

CBD: a marijuana miracle or just another health fad?

Aaron Horn first came across cannabidiol, or CBD, about three years ago in Glastonbury – the town, not the festival. “I found it at this amazing hemp shop, Hemp in Avalon,” recalls Horn, a musician who is now 35. “It’s run by a guy called Free. His last name is Cannabis. He changed his name by deed poll to Free Cannabis.” Horn bought a tube of high-concentration CBD paste – “it comes out like a brown toothpaste, almost” – and it was recommended he put a tiny dot on his finger and pop it in his mouth.
