South Africa: Medicinal dagga could be legal in 3 months

Durban - Dagga could become legal for medicinal purposes as early as three months’ time.

IFP MP Narend Singh told The Independent on Saturday that the change in legislation “could be finalised by the end of July, or August”, cautiously adding: “But you never know.”

Last year his fellow party MP, the late Mario Oriani-Ambrosini, made an urgent call for its legalisation for medicinal use. He had been using it for his lung cancer.

His appeal found an ear in the country’s top office.

“I was touched to see the man I’ve known and worked with for more than 20 years in this condition. I’ve asked the minister of health to look into this matter,” President Jacob Zuma said in Parliament.

Cannabis candidate will meet dissidents

A PRO-CANNABIS candidate standing in next week’s Westminster election says he would meet the dissident gangs targeting people in Strabane for using the drug.

Barry Brown will contest the West Tyrone seat on behalf of the ‘Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol (CISTA) party. He is one of three CISTA members standing in the North, alongside Andrew Magorrian (South Down) and Glenn Donnelly (North Down).

Alongside seven other candidates Mr Brown put forward his case for election during a debate on Tuesday evening.

He claimed that the illegal cannabis market was costing the local economy £3 million every week. With proper regulation it could be grown, inspected, consumed and even exported from Northern Ireland, Barry Brown said.

Bill Blair backs legalization of marijuana, defends carding as he seeks Liberal seat

TORONTO – Former Toronto police chief Bill Blair says he supports the legalization of marijuana in Canada as long as there is a strong regulatory component to it.

“In the regulation of marijuana, then you can control who it is sold to, where it is sold and when it is sold. You can control the price. You can tax the thing,” Blair said during an interview on Global’s The Morning Show Thursday morning.

“You can make sure the decision to not sell it to a 14-year-old is left to a responsible adult, not some gangster in a stairwell.”

Blair, who is currently seeking the federal Liberal nomination in the riding of Scarborough Southwest, said using the criminal model to prohibit the use and trafficking of marijuana isn’t working.
