City to vote on recommendations to curb some medical cannabis growth in homes

A Winnipeg city committee is set to vote on plans to crack down on homegrown, designated medical cannabis growers.

In March, city hall received a report that looked into medical cannabis production in residential areas, which found the city could set limits on at-home marijuana growth through changes to zoning and neighbourhood livability bylaws.

City councillors then put forward a motion to have the public service get more information on the changes required to amend these bylaws.

Anyone looking to open a cannabis growing or production operation in Wellington North in the next year is out of luck. The township won’t be taking any new applications until at least the fall of 2022.

Council passed an interim control bylaw prohibiting the establishment of new commercial and medical cannabis production facilities for a one-year period at its Monday meeting. Staff will use the breathing room to undertake a study of potential new rules to regulate where and how the operations can be set up, taking into consideration noise, odour, water usage, security and traffic.

Party in Finland's ruling coalition backs legalising cannabis

Finland’s debate on cannabis use has received a new boost after the Green League, one of the parties in the ruling government coalition, supported a proposal to work towards legalising the drug. The party calls the current system "prohibition".

The Green League, the party of Finland's interior minister, Maria Ohisalo, voted on the issue during a virtual conference earlier this month and the motion was accepted, albeit with the smallest possible margin: 183 votes to 181.

"We will indeed need to do quite some convincing still within our own party," admitted the Green League's Helsinki city council member Coel Thomas, who was one of the instigators of the proposal.

Cannabis facility on McGill?

Kamloops building

The City of Kamloops is considering issuing a permit for a small cannabis processing facility to operate along McGill Road.

At its meeting Tuesday afternoon, city council voted in favour of having staff distribute a notice of intent to consider issuing the temporary use permit. (Photo by: Tim Petruk)

According to city staff, if the permit is awarded, the business — which would operate in an existing building located at McGill Road and Concordia Way — would be allowed to prepare and package small batches of dried cannabis and extract oils for use in topicals, edibles and other products.

Two delivery trucks will take products created in the facility to retailers. No retail space would be set up at the facility itself.
