Researchers may be one step closer to developing the equivalent of a Breathalyzer for detecting Cannabis use.

In an early study, scientists found that their rapid test was able to reliably detect THC in people's saliva in under 5 minutes. THC, short for tetrahydrocannabinol, is the active ingredient in cannabis.

Cannabis and other substance use can be a difficult subject for teachers to discuss with students. A group of Durham Region school boards are hoping to change that through improved staff training and by working to reduce the stigma. Albert Delitala reports.

Training designed to destigmatize the use of cannabis and other substances is coming to three school boards in Durham Region.

A new training guide, Understanding Substance Use, Stigma and Cannabis Vaping, is being rolled out to select educators within the Durham District School Board (DDSB), the Durham Catholic District School Board, and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board.

Three years on, we need to relax cannabis regulation

tax preparation

Three years ago Sunday (October 17, 2018), Canada legalized adult-use recreational cannabis. The Trudeau government deserves credit for making this happen, as most Canadians had for some time believed that the consequences of prohibition outweighed whatever negatives would arise from legalization. That said, the Cannabis Act is now three years old, and it needs to be amended to make the legal cannabis market more consumer- and patient-friendly.

Cannabis legalization acceptance differs along ethnic lines in B.C., poll reveals

legal cannabis sign

Three years ago, the legal consumption of marijuana became a reality across Canada. Every Canadian province quickly established its own set of sales guidelines, even if it took a bit longer to properly commercialize offerings such as edibles and cannabis-infused drinks.

The topic of marijuana was barely mentioned in the last federal election campaign. When Research Co. and Glacier Media asked British Columbians this month about their views on the current state of affairs, more than three in five (62%) agree with the decision to allow cannabis sales in Canada, down eight points since a survey conducted in July 2020.

Government review aims to shape next chapter of legalization

cannabis bud

Three years after Canada legalized cannabis, the industry appears ready for a reset.

When midnight struck on Oct. 17, 2018, Canada became the first developed nation to allow the sale of cannabis for recreational purposes, and since then the industry has had its share of ups and downs. While billions of dollars worth of legal pot has been sold across thousands of licensed stores, helping to stamp out roughly half of the illicit market, it's also seen many cannabis companies cumulatively post billions of dollars in losses as market dynamics warped lofty expectations made in the early days of legalization.

How Well Is Cannabis Legalization Curtailing the Illegal Market? A Multi-wave Analysis of Canada’s National Cannabis Survey

marijuana plant

In 2018, the government of Canada legalized cannabis for non-medical use. In addition to safeguarding public health, the main objective was to divert profits from the illicit market and restricting its availability to youth. This dramatic shift in policy direction introduces new challenges for the criminal justice system due to the persistence of unlawful distribution among persons who refuse to abide by the new law. Continuing unlawful distribution is foreseeable, in part, because of stringent measures to reduce availability by targeting participants in the illegal market.

Cannabis retailers say government not going to bat for them

woman

A group of Okanagan cannabis retailers are calling for the resignation of B.C.’s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth.

In an open letter to Premier John Horgan, the Okanagan Cannabis Collective, says Farnworth has demonstrated he is “incapable” of handling the file.

“It is through his failed leadership that the industry has experienced unnecessary hardships, in particular as it relates to the proliferation of illegal brick and mortar and illegal online cannabis stores,” says the letter sent to Horgan on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the collective, Spiritleaf Vernon owner Sarah Ballantyne said many legal retailers are struggling to survive due to rampant unlicensed pot shops.

City of Winnipeg moves toward new rules on medical cannabis grow operations

marijuana plant

Residents fed up with marijuana grow operations in their neighbourhoods see a victory in a City of Winnipeg plan to limit where those operations are allowed.

A number of changes to create a new medical cannabis licensing regime are proposed in a report presented to the city's property, planning and development committee on Wednesday, following pressure by numerous residents.

Under the changes, cannabis cultivation facilities would only be permitted in manufacturing zones and would require air filtration/exhaust systems.

The changes would also require minimum setbacks between buildings where marijuana is cultivated and/or stored that are near residential properties, schools, public parks or playgrounds.
