Medical marijuana facility hits roadblock

A business proposal in the Rural Municipality of Wilton is facing an uncertain future after pulling a development application.

Agro Greens Natural Products Ltd is the company behind the proposal, and are currently seeking a new location for their proposed medical marijuana facility. The business owners had a chance to present their idea to Wilton residents at a meeting back in May, and were met with a list of concerns from area residents. After that meeting, the application was left to the RM council to decide upon.

However, council was left without an application to consider after the proposal was pulled.

Don’t trust labels on edible cannabis, study finds

Only 17% of products tested were accurately labelled

People buying edible cannabis products from marijuana dispensaries can’t trust the labels because they can overstate or understate the amount of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), according to a new study involving West Coast products.

Researchers say their results suggest that consumers might be overdosing, risking side effects such as psychosis and serious anxiety, not to mention being cheated, by false labels.

Company takes serious approach

There are few, if any, facilities like this in North America.

ABcann Medicinals Inc. opened its door to the media Wednesday afternoon.

The medicinal marijuana company has been operating near the end of a quiet road on the outskirts of Napanee since the new year.

The facility was constructed in an existing building, but from the outer walls inward is all brand new and high-tech.

When fully up and running, chief operating officer Geoff Davis said, ABcann Medicinals will be able to produce from between 36 to 55 kilograms (80 to 120 pounds) of medicinal marijuana per month -- enough of the drug to supply about 2,500 patients.

"Hopefully, we are going to grow and have more jobs for the people in Napanee and Greater Napanee," Davis said.

Old mining town turns to marijuana after prison, factory close

WALSENBURG, Colo. – A developer's plan to build hundreds of cannabis greenhouses could make this tiny southern Colorado town one of the nation's largest producers of legal marijuana.

The town sold 330 acres of municipal land for more than $1 million to create a campus for growing, processing and distribution, with the marijuana to be trucked 160 miles north to consumers in metro Denver. Walsenburg is a former coal mining town that never recovered when the mines closed by the 1960s, and its population has dropped to fewer than 3,000 residents. In Huerfano County, which is home to Walsenburg, 20% of the population lives below poverty level.

Changes to Lloyd’s of London Cannabis Insurance

By Hayes Brokers

As you may have already heard, Lloyd’s of London announced last week that they are pulling out of the cannabis insurance industry effective immediately. Their reason? They no longer want to write business in the US until the cannabis industry is legal (no longer classified as a Schedule One drug) nationwide so as to avoid problems with federal authorities in states where marijuana is legal medically or recreationally.

Vancouver becomes 1st in Canada to license and regulate pot shops, permitting about 100 retailers to open

Vancouver city council has voted to regulate and license the roughly 100 medical marijuana retailers in the city, making it the first city in Canada to do so.

The bylaw was supported by Mayor Gregor Robertson, the dominant Vision Vancouver councillors, and Green Party Coun. Adriane Carr. Opposed were the city's three Non-Partisan Association councillors.

Coun. Kerry Jang called the controversial bylaw "a common-sense approach to dealing with the explosion of medical marijuana shops in our city."

The bylaw will charge retail dealers a $30,000 licence fee — the city's highest permit cost — and prevent shops from operating within 300 metres of community centres, schools and other pot shops.
