The next billion entrepreneurs will be women

There’s an abundance of advice and literature on the key factors that make a business successful. Ask any expert, and they’ll likely give you a long list that includes delivering a product that has a market need, great market timing, a team that can execute together, and many others.

But until recently, one factor has been the best-kept secret in business… and it’s likely not what you think. In a nutshell, it’s women. While, men are most often at the helm of a company, it’s becoming more evident that women are driving increased business success. And they’re turning the heads of high profile male leaders, big name corporations and even governments, who are not only taking notice of their leadership skills, but emerging as their biggest advocates.

Illinois: Medical pot farms finally get growing

Multiple marijuana farms have planted crops, and the state is preparing to begin tracking each plant from “seed to sale.”

Five cultivation centers are authorized by the state to begin growing, said Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Kristi Jones.

Two downstate operations — Ataraxia, in Albion, and Revolution Cannabis-Delavan, in Delavan — have announced they have begun farming marijuana.

The state, however, won’t say which companies have been allowed to begin cultivating.

It also won’t say how much marijuana has been planted.

Ataraxia said it’s got hundreds of plants going and hopes to have product available by October.

Eustis family nursery seeks marijuana license

USTIS – After 41 years of cultivating lush, indoor tropical plants, the owners of Treadwell Nursery hope to make a dramatic turn to a new crop.

They now want to grow medical marijuana.

Glen and Sharon Treadwell and their three adult daughters appear to be what some lawmakers said they had in mind when they wrote the state's limited medical-marijuana law. The goal was to have old-Florida growers establish the industry.

"My sister Julie likes to say, 'If you'd have asked me if there would be aliens or if mom and dad would have considered growing cannabis, I would have bet on the aliens,'" said Jammie Treadwell of her religiously conservative parents.

How the stock downturn has hit the lives of Chinese investors, not just their wallets

ONG KONG: Farmers turned village community centers into makeshift trading floors. Young workers quit low-paying jobs to play the market full time. Retirees started investment clubs, counseling one another on stock picks.

China fell under the spell of the stock market over the last year, as millions of factory owners, university students, wheat growers and other investors jumped at a chance to strike it rich.

"When we eat breakfast, we think of the stock market. When we sleep, we see flashing red and green screens," said Elizabeth Xu, 37, a customer service supervisor at an electronics company in Shanghai, who invested $2,500 last fall. "This is our new sport."
