Washington Lawyers Can Operate Marijuana Businesses

Lawyers in the state of Washington—one of five U.S. jurisdictions that have legalized recreational cannabis use—are generally free to operate marijuana-related businesses and to engage in personal use of the drug, the Washington state bar's ethics committee advised recently.

The opinion tackles questions the Washington Supreme Court left open last year when it adopted a new comment in the state's lawyer conduct rules authorizing members of the bar to provide legal advice to marijuana industry clients, but declined to approve another change that would have insulated lawyers from discipline for consuming the drug and investing in cannabis-related businesses.

Operational issues for medical marijuana producers

As news stories about the rise of legal marijuana businesses continue apace in the national media, New York State moved closer toward permitted marijuana use for medicinal purposes under the state’s Compassionate Care Act (Article 33, Title 5-A of the New York Public Health Law).

In early June, we learned that 43 groups submitted applications in the hopes of receiving one of the five licenses to be granted by the state Department of Health to grow and sell medical marijuana in New York. Though the five groups that ultimately receive the licenses from the DOH may be perceived as “hitting the jackpot,” they will nonetheless be confronted with a unique set of challenges in light of the current legal framework for businesses in the medical marijuana industry.

6 Non-Business Books Every Entrepreneur Should Read

I’m a voracious reader. I read at least 150 new books each year, spanning almost every genre of nonfiction and several fiction categories. I’m never far away from my Kindle, and I rarely make it through a week without ordering a new hardcover to my door through Amazon Prime.

Every good book contains at least one piece of advice that makes me a better entrepreneur. Although traditional business books have many lessons, the books I’ve found most transformative for my startup—and for myself as a leader—haven’t been business books in the classical sense. Instead, they’ve been great nonfiction finds that have helped inspire me at least one specific way.

Northwest Senators Push To Open Banking To Cannabis Businesses

Legal marijuana is a rapidly-growing reality. Four states, including Oregon and Washington, have legalized recreational use of the drug. Several more – including California – could well do so by the end of next year. Forty states have legalized it in some form for medicinal use.

Now, US Senators from Oregon, Washington and Colorado hope to start breaking down the federal barriers that lock many legal cannabis businesses out of routine banking and financial services.

When you start a business, one of the first things you do is set up bank accounts. But for a lot of budding entrepreneurs in states with legal marijuana markets, that’s often nearly impossible.

But the dispensary hasn’t been able to obtain marijuana because approved cultivation facilities have been slow to start and haven’t produced a viable batch.
