Natural pest control business gets boost from medical cannabis industry

TORONTO – When Sarah Stuive first got into the natural pest control business – which uses predatory insects, or “good bugs,” to weed out pests – she never expected to be working with cannabis plants.

But thanks to Health Canada regulations that limit the use of chemical pesticides on medical marijuana in order to make sure the plants are safe for consumption, the biological control specialist says she’s seeing an uptick in business.

“I have seen a lot of growth in demand since the start of the cannabis industry,” said Stuive, who works for Global Horticultural and also provides her services to vegetable farmers and plant growers. “It’s a new alternative to chemicals.”

NHL forces marijuana company to change stock listing, is a bummer

As you know, the National Hockey League is very protective of its trademarks, lest anyone think lesser about their Toronto Maple Leafs dog toy tosser.

So the last thing the NHL would want is to be associated with something as destructive and nefarious – according to the cinematic classic “Reefer Madness” – as marijuana. (Although 'drinking tubes" that looked like bongs were OK for a while.)

Unlicensed Marijuana Stores Grow Like Weeds in LA

LOS ANGELES -- Graffiti-tagged buildings, barricaded doors and iron-barred windows mark nearly every block of Avalon Boulevard as it cuts through the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood of Wilmington, 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

The streets are lined with small mom-and-pop shops - clothing stores, a piñata shop, garages and small, family-owned restaurants - and a clutch of illegal medical marijuana dispensaries, some located within feet of each other.

Other nearby dispensaries are shuttered with signs announcing 'closed,' 'for lease' and 'for rent' - the result of the city's most recent attempts to close the door on L.A.'s robust illegal medical marijuana industry. But when one dispensary closes, it usually opens somewhere else, police say.

First marijuana dispensary in Las Vegas area opening Monday

Fifteen years after medical marijuana was legalized in Nevada, Clark County’s first retail dispensary plans to open to the public Monday.

Euphoria Wellness, 7780 S. Jones Blvd., will begin selling to patients at 10 a.m. Monday. To help contend with expected high demand, only 250 people who have pre-registered will be allowed to buy marijuana and cannabis-infused products on each of the first two days.

On Wednesday, the dispensary will be open to any licensed cardholder, of which there are about 9,500 statewide. Medical marijuana cardholders from other states also will be able to shop at Nevada dispensaries.

Are Women Dominating The Marijuana Industry?

Is the marijuana economy the secret weapon in the battle of the sexes? As Gogo Lidz puts it in Newsweek's latest cover story, "It seems fitting that a plant called Mary Jane could smash the patriarchy. After all, only female marijuana flowers produce cannabinoids like THC...And women are moving into the pot business so quickly that they could make it the first billion-dollar industry that isn't dominated by men."

Medical marijuana business no gold rush

Licensed growers and would-be growers dial back expectations as illegal dispensaries and home growers continue to flourish

The gold rush excitement created by Health Canada licensing medical marijuana businesses appears to be cooling, in part because of B.C.’s illegal dispensaries and pot users who are challenging federal government rules in court.

As of March, 25 commercial operators in Canada — six in B.C. — have been authorized by Health Canada to produce or sell marijuana grown under strict conditions and mailed to clients with doctor’s prescriptions.
