The long, slow road to a legal medical marijuana regime in Illinois is finally approaching the point of getting the drugs to patients. This week, regulators expect to send official identification cards to qualified patients, the Chicago Tribune reported, one of the final few steps required before full implementation.

The Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe of Nevada and Oregon announced on Wednesday their intent to enter the medical marijuana industry with a new cultivation facility.

Tribal leadership decided to enter the medical marijuana marketplace after “much deliberation and discussion,” according to Tildon Smart, chairman of the tribe.

“There are no jobs,” Smart said. “There’s nothing really out here for us. This is a way to bring wellness back into our community.”
