Santa Paula planning panel backs marijuana rules

The sale, cultivation and delivery of medical marijuana soon could become expressly prohibited within the city of Santa Paula, strengthening a ban already in place.

The Santa Paula Planning Commission voted 3-0 Friday in support of a resolution that recommends changes to the city's municipal code. The changes, which must be approved by the City Council, would ban all commercial cannabis activity, mobile marijuana dispensaries, and cultivation and delivery of marijuana within the city.

Santa Paula's municipal code already prohibits the use of any building or real property for purposes prohibited by federal law, but does not explicitly refer to marijuana-related activities.

The proposed ordinance, if approved by the council, would make that prohibition clear.

Arizona dairy company gets OK to grow marijuana

FLORENCE – A Casa Grande dairy company is getting into the medical marijuana business.

The Casa Grande Dispatch reports the Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 to permit Sidewinder Dairy to grow medical pot in an enclosed 9,650-square-foot facility.

Planning and zoning officials recommended the indoor grow rather than the initially proposed outdoor operation, which garnered opposition from people concerned about access for children and criminals.

The permit is subject to review in a year. Marijuana grown at the site is slated to go to a dispensary in Mesa.

The peaks and pitfalls of pot investing

It wasn't so many years ago that the words "cannabis gathering" only meant a joint being passed around the room and some sturdy philosophizing about life, the universe, and the bounties of the magic leaf. The picture could not have been more removed from that at the Cannabis Private Investment Summit organized by Kahner Global in New York City a couple of weeks ago. This was a room full of professional suits. On the one side, there were private family offices and high net worth investors potentially wanting to latch on to the exploding legal cannabis industry. On the other side, individuals with established cannabis-related companies pitching their products or services, informing and educating everyone about the opportunities in the space.

As more and more states across the U.S. move toward the full legalization of cannabis — and even as the federal government loosens its grip on the illegality of the drug — a growing number of employers are enacting stricter substance abuse policies.

According to The Denver Post, the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently performed a first-of-its-kind survey about drug policies in states where cannabis is legal. The survey interviewed 623 HR representatives about their companies’ drug policies.
