'Suits' and 'Stoners' Are Fighting for the Soul of the Weed Industry

"It took me getting into the weed business to actually put on a suit," laughs Duncan Cameron at the Denver grow he oversees. As chief production officer at Colorado dispensary Good Chemistry, Cameron has given tours of the company's 20,000 square-foot grow to businesspeople and politicians in the era of legal cannabis. Often, his role requires him to dress up. Today, he sports a Good Chemistry t-shirt.

Canadian Medical Cannabis Businesses Prepare to Diversify as Legalization Looms

As he sits in the sleek, modern waiting room of National Access Cannabis, Derek Ogden can envision what his quiet education clinic in Hintonburg might some day become: A bustling dispensary for medical marijuana.

For the moment, Ogden’s Ottawa operation is a membership- and information-based business. Its services include connecting clients to a network of physicians for a medical assessment, helping them to navigate the paperwork to obtain a medical cannabis card, and going as far as offering cooking-with-cannabis classes.

It just can’t have any weed on site.

“I think there’s a large number of patients that really do want to go in (to a dispensary), speak to somebody and view the various types of products,” Ogden.

Marijuana Industry Sees Green In Florida

There wasn’t a tie-dyed shirt to be found last week at a gathering in Central Florida where the buzz was all about the business of pot.

More than 3,000 people from across the nation and seven other countries swapped information about grow lights, soil nutrients and safes — to stash money and products — at the marijuana industry’s premiere trade show. And the choice of Florida for the event was no accident.

Cannabis convention controversy: The 'free' samples that cost $299

The second Northwest Cannabis Classic trade show at the Dena‘ina Civic and Convention Center over the weekend had plenty of free giveaways, including marijuana leaf stickers and lighters. A few exhibitor booths even had edibles suchas candies and cookies.

But they wouldn’t get you high.

"These aren’t infused,” said Martin Christensen of the Oracle Cookie Company, pointing at the elaborately flavored cookies he had laid out for convention attendees to try. “The cops actually came over and asked me, ‘Are these infused?’ ”

Anchorage Police Department Sgt. Josh Nolder and two other officers walked the convention floor to make sure pot wasn't being consumed, bought or sold.

Canada: Toronto bylaw officers set to crack down on marijuana dispensaries

The grass soon won’t look so green for Toronto’s pot dispensaries.

With at least 78 marijuana dispensaries operating in the city, bylaw officers will be hitting them with hefty fines for zoning bylaw violations by the end of the month, according to municipal officials.

“In this case, because these types of activities and uses are not permitted, then yes, that would be the end goal, that these places are shut down,” said Mark Sraga, Toronto’s director of licensing and standards.

But Sraga said he would be surprised to see anyone shutter their storefront dispensaries just yet.

Canada: America's Next Marijuana Capital

In a number of states, the legal use of marijuana for recreational purposes is well on its way, but it remains illegal on a federal level. This is causing major problems for the industry’s emerging dealers. According to The Guardian, people like Andy Williams of Colorado are faced with numerous financial complications as a result of the situation. The First Bank of Colorado has closed his accounts and those of all his family members involved in the business. This effectively prevents him from attaining any financial help from the institution, forcing him to fund expansion through personal loans from friends and family.

Washington marijuana sales surpass $1B

Marijuana sales in Washington continue to rise nearly two years after recreational marijuana became legal in the state.

Sales just passed $1 billion in May and retailers do not expect sales to slow down.

"It's about a revolution,” Salesman Devon Swanson said. “It's about taking it to that next level."

Swanson was not surprised when he heard about how high marijuana sales have gotten. He said more and more people are trying pot now that it is legal and it customer base keeps growing.

"They see as something that they can learn more about and it's fun for them," Swanson said.

More sales also means more competition. There have been at least six new retail stores that have been opened since Fall 2015.
