While everyone might not agree about the best way to cultivate cannabis, most will agree the process is complicated.

Newly released state figures show Colorado's marijuana dispensaries sold $1.3 billion worth of recreational and medical pot in 2016.

The Denver Post reports that the Colorado Department of Revenue released tax data Thursday showing the third straight year for growth since the state legalized recreational marijuana sales.

Last year's total pot sales were up from about $996 million in 2015 and $699 million the previous year.

According to the 2016 data, recreational marijuana accounted for $875 million of the sales total, while $438 million of medical pot was sold.

Colorado brought in close to $200 million in tax and fees revenue last year.

Enforcement officers with the Alcohol and Marijuana Control office seized CBD oil from several marijuana stores on Thursday.

Sara Chambers, acting director of the office, wrote in a release the oil fell under the state regulation definition of marijuana. Stores selling the products that hadn't gone through the state's testing and packaging requirements were violating state law, she wrote.

CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, is a compound found in both cannabis and hemp. It's not psychoactive, so it doesn't get people high, unlike THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

CBD oil is often used for pain management and has been researched in treating a wide range of illnesses. It can be made into a variety of products, like oils and salves.

As increasingly more marijuana growers entered the market and more states allowed residents to legally grow marijuana, cannabis prices dropped throughout 2016. Wholesale marijuana prices late in the year were roughly half the levels of 12 months earlier.
