Canopy Growth Says Number of Medical Marijuana Patients More Than Tripled

Canada’s largest publicly traded marijuana company says it has had a hard time keeping up with demand for high-potency pot as its list of registered medical marijuana patients more than tripled at the end of last year.

Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED) says about one-third of its customers want moderate to high levels of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana, and they’re willing to pay a premium price for it.

“And we really didn’t have that in the (October-December) quarter – almost ever,” CEO Bruce Linton said Tuesday on a conference call after the company reported its third quarter results.

California Cannabis Growers Must Quickly Comply With Water-Quality Rules

Last month, hundreds of Emerald Triangle cannabis farmers received letters from the state threatening penalties unless they complied with California water quality regulations.

Thousands of growers in Northern California have complied with these regulations, to be extended statewide by 2018. But State Water Resources Control Board Office of Enforcement Director Cris Carrigan said that officials at the agency still have their work cut out for them.

“There has never been anything like this, dude,” Carrigan said with a laugh. “It’s a $10 billion industry in California that has been unregulated until now. So no, there has never been anything like this before.”

Classic Marijuana Sales Are Tumbling as a New Way of Getting High Takes Over

"Do you even vape, bro?" In California, the answer is increasingly, "Yes."

Vaping is an alternative to smoking that involves inhaling vapor from an electronic device. Between 2015 and 2016, sales of marijuana oil cartridges, which are used for vaping, soared 400% among customers who use delivery service Eaze, dubbed the "Uber for weed."

Vaporizers' explosive growth may be a key driver in the falling sales of marijuana flower, the fluffy, green stuff you smoke, according to Eaze's second annual "State of Cannabis" report.

High Expectations for Massachusetts' Marijuana Industry

As Massachusetts’ marijuana market is poised to move from street corners to store fronts, investors are starting to see green — and it’s not just the plants.

The Bay State will be the first on the East Coast to tap into the legal weed market and industry experts predict big payoffs. By 2020, marijuana sales in the state will top $1.1 billion and it will be a $21 billion market nationwide, according to market research data by New Frontier. But with this much money at stake, some are wondering what role small businesses will play in this modern-day gold rush.

Long a hub for the tech and medical industries, Troy Dayton, CEO of the Arcview Group, which analyzes the marijuana markets, predicts Boston could soon become a hub for marijuana too.

Canadian Cannabis Industry Opposes Call for Plain Packaging and Bans on Advertising

Garfield Mahood has spent 30 years fighting for the Canadian government to require plain packaging for cigarettes.

So, the long-time non-smokers' rights activist says he doesn't have much faith in the government's ability to regulate and restrict the marketing of marijuana.

"They identified tobacco products as a cause of disease back in the 1950s," said Mahood, president of the Campaign for Justice on Tobacco Fraud. "They've never been able to bring this epidemic close to a conclusion.

"What would give you faith that health departments are going to effectively regulate any health problems related to these other drugs?"

Oregon rolls out marijuana delivery industry

People can now have marijuana delivered to their home in the state of Oregon.

It's the first state to allow delivery and the Oregon Liquor Control Commission has granted permits to dispensaries across the state, KGW-TV reports.

The OLCC is regulating the delivery system, which includes stipulations such as that the marijuana must be transported in a locked box and secured to the delivery vehicle.

For those staying at motels, campgrounds or dorms, delivery is not legal.
