The County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously today to ban all commercial cannabis activities -- medical and non-medical -- in unincorporated areas and took a first pass at regulating personal cultivation.

The move extends a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries in unincorporated areas that has been in place since 2010 and broadens the prohibition to include the cultivation, manufacture, testing and distribution of the drug for other than personal use.

Though some form of cannabis is now legal in 29 states and the District of Columbia, a lack of banking options for cannabis businesses in the United States continues to force marijuana merchants to rely solely on cash transactions. Nick Clegg has warned of the risks of 'unfettered commercialisation', but how could the UK build a model that works for both small and large enterprises?

Former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg claimed on Friday that legalising cannabis in the UK would improve public , but warned of the “risks of unfettered commercialisation”.

In doing so, Mr Clegg highlighted the potential tension between building a model that works for health and one that works for business.

So what might that model look like and what could it mean for UK business?

Oil extraction is becoming a strength for Aurora Cannabis (TSXV:ACB), says Canaccord Genuity analyst Neil Maruoka. 

This morning, Aurora Cannabis and Radient Technologies announced what it described as positive results from a research joint venture into extraction. The companies say the results have led them to pursue commercialization. 

The marijuana sector’s first streaming company Cannabis Wheaton Income Corp., which came roaring onto the marijuana scene a month ago, has cancelled an $80 million financing deal with investment banks that also have stakes in the company.

Cannabis Wheaton, which provides seed money to marijuana producers in exchange for a slice of future production, said in a statement Monday that ending the deal was a mutual decision between the royalty company and its lead financing agents Eight Capital and Canaccord Genuity Corp. It did not give a specific reason but alluded to damaging reports about the agreement.

This phrase can be applied to an infinite number of situations but today we want to focus on Horizons Medical Marijuana Life Sciences ETF (HMMJ.TO: TSX) (HMLSF: OTC).

When it comes to investing, timing and selectivity are two major keys for success. Although this is especially true for marijuana stocks, the ETF missed the mark…badly.  

From a timing standpoint, the ETF could not have launched at a worse time as marijuana stocks were trading near their 52-week highs and it is down more than 15% since it started trading. 

Marijuana dispensaries still have yet to make a single sale more than a year after Hawaii awarded its first eight medical marijuana dispensary licenses.

The dispensaries cannot sell the drug until the state Health Department certifies laboratories to test the quality of the marijuana, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported (http://bit.ly/2rsUXgG) on Monday.

Helen Cho, director of integrated strategy for Aloha Green Holdings Inc., says her Oahu dispensary has marijuana stored and ready to sell. Maui Grown Therapies and Pono Life Sciences Maui LLC also have marijuana ready to sell. A fourth company, Manoa Botanicals LLC, is growing pot but hasn't harvested it yet.
