Incoming marijuana legislation heralds momentous change for the approach to pot, but British Columbia Premier John Horgan questions if everyone will buy into the new legal system this summer.

Legislation regulating recreational marijuana in B.C. is expected to be introduced Thursday. The province is one of the last in Canada to table its marijuana rules as the country adapts to legalized pot.

Horgan said he expects the country to go through an extensive marijuana learning curve that will see some embracing the ability to purchase pot legally at private or government stores while others may stick to illegal suppliers.

Online courses covering a range of topics in the cannabis industry will be offered through College Boreal in anticipation of the upcoming legalization of its sale and use in Canada.

“These courses will focus on the production, sale of and marketing of cannabis and the financing of a cannabis business,” the college said in a release. “Each course is given over an eight-week period.”

The cannabis plant has been used in medicine for thousands of years, the college noted, but it is also used recreationally.

“The purpose of these training courses is to allow people to be informed and to gain perspective while preparing for jobs in this emerging industry.”

A few weeks ago, Sam Houston, a California cannabis aficionado, was checking out some of his favorite YouTube channels when he noticed a trend.

One by one, accounts such as those run by users “Vader OG” and the horticulturalist known as Jorge Cervantes were being shut down. All were given the same ominous message: The channel’s content had been flagged for review and was found to violate YouTube’s guidelines.

Cannabis demand is budding, but it wasn't all good news for one of Canada's biggest marijuana growers.

This very well could be a game-changing year for the cannabis industry. In June, Canada's Senate will vote on bill C-45, more affably known as the Cannabis Act, which, if approved, could soon thereafter result in recreational marijuana sales being legal. The current timeline suggests sales could kick off in August or September.

Organic produce has come a long way from farmers in hemp clothes peddling ugly vegetables to the big business it is today, available in nearly every grocery store in North America.

It’s easy to see how it got that far. Consumers liked it and demanded it. And successful conventional produce grower-shippers found a way to grow and deliver high quality organic fruits and vegetables.

Even before the mainstreaming of organic produce, greenhouse produce went through a similar lifecycle. The North American consumer could get exotic greenhouse tomatoes or peppers from Holland grown under glass. It was high-quality and different than domestic field grown.

Investors may want to pay close attention to the ancillary cannabis industry.

The marijuana industry is growing by leaps and bounds, and over the past two-plus years, cannabis stocks have reflected this growth. In many instances, pot stocks are up more than 1,000% since the beginning of 2016.

Sometimes however, it’s very easy to see a movement coming at you like a distant tsunami. Such is the case with the imminent legalization of cannabis in Canada.

Majority of pot shops continue to operate outside the rules.

It's been nearly two years since the City of Vancouver ordered unlicensed dispensaries to shut down or face legal consequences and, while some have paid the $30,000 licensing fee, many more continue to operate outside the rules.

According to the city, there are just over 100 marijuana shops in Vancouver as of April 10.

Of those, roughly a third are not subject to enforcement — including 15 that have paid the licensing fee, as well as stores that have been issued a development permit but are still waiting for their licence.

The 77 others are operating outside city regulations and are subject to enforcement.

Businesses don’t yet realize the impact of marijuana in the workplace, once it has been legalized. That’s according to the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. “This is one of the most significant changes in the workplace in recent years, states Executive Manager, Lezlie Strasser. “The Chamber is concerned about how businesses will be able to adjust and it’s important we help them to address the issue.”
