Growth of licensed cannabis producers offers HVAC opportunities

As cultivators and consumers await the legalization of recreational marijuana in Canada late summer 2018, opportunities grow for HVAC contractors.

In “A snapshot of licensed cannabis producers,” released April 26, 2018, Statistics Canada (StatsCan) reported a rapid growth of licensed medical producers.

In March 2018, there were 97 facilities nationally, more than double the number in March 2017. Production of dried cannabis products hit 80,535 kilograms in 2017, up from 35,912 in 2016 and 9,659 in 2015.

Victoria medical clinic specializes in treatment with cannabis

For all the talk about the incoming legalization of recreational cannabis, the topic of medical cannabis seems to have been lost in the haze, says one Victoria businessman.

While recreational users will be able to walk into a retail store and buy pot as easily as a bottle of beer, James Whitehead said the Health Canada mail-order system to obtain medical marijuana can be bureaucratic and confusing.

As a result, many who use cannabis for pain relief, arthritis or insomnia end up buying it from one of Victoria’s three dozen dispensaries.

The problem with that, Whitehead said, is that not all dispensary staff are qualified to give medical advice.

Employers left with safety concerns as legalization approaches

Changes to federal laws governing recreational cannabis use this summer has employers seeking to clear the haze on some burning questions when it comes to worker safety and company liability at the job site.

Questions of note include: As with alcohol consumption, can the same workplace restrictions apply to cannabis use? And how do employers handle workers who are heavy users of cannabis and may have a residual level of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive ingredient of cannabis, in their bloodstream for days or a week after smoking a joint?

Edible marijuana companies find creative ways to push product at Edmonton Cannabis Expo

Some push to online sales, others sell DIY materials while waiting for potential edible legalization in 2019.

For many vendors, Edmonton's Cannabis and Hemp Expo was a chance to showcase their products ahead of legalization in summer 2018.

But companies that want to sell edible cannabis for recreational use are playing the long game.

Edibles for sale by companies weren't included in the initial legalization plan set for 2018, but were included in an amendment that would schedule their legalization for the following year.

Pot shops offer double the rent, long leases to scoop up best spots in Calgary

City data shows many vying for prime locations despite no promise of opening.

Cannabis companies are scrambling and taking risks to secure prime spots in Calgary, a real estate broker says.

Companies, hoping to get in on the industry boom expected with legalization later this year, must secure permissions from municipal and provincial governments — and that requires leasing rental space first.

In bidding wars, some companies are offering to pay double the rent, Nick Preston with Colliers International Commercial Real Estate said Friday.

And most are signing leases of five to 10 years even though they may not be allowed to open, he said.
