Update: Vancouver city council ignores Ottawa's warning and sends rules for marijuana sales

Citizens will soon get to have a say on how Vancouver should regulate the storefront sale of medicinal marijuana.

City council ignored a warning from Health Canada and voted to send a proposed legal framework for cannabis-related businesses to a public hearing.

When the new rules are eventually voted into law—an outcome that’s all but certain given councillors from all three civic parties have already spoken in their favour—Vancouver will become the first municipality in Canada to permit and regulate the over-the-counter sale of marijuana.

Vancouver vs. federal government marijuana showdown intensifies

OTTAWA - The political showdown between the Harper government and Vancouver intensified Tuesday in advance of city council’s consideration of a plan to strictly regulate the fast-growing pot dispensary business.

Two federal ministers sent a stern letter to both council and the Vancouver Police Department saying authorities should crack down rather than regulate and therefore legitimize pot dispensaries.

The letter, signed by Health Minister Rona Ambrose and Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, warns that the city’s action could lead to the tripling in youth usage of a substance that brings “serious and lasting” negative health effects.

Does having a green thumb help when starting a marijuana farm?

By Caroline Zelonka

Yes. For a new marijuana business, your grower is akin to your technical co-founder. And it's not just your random green thumb—it's a marijuana-specific thumb. Marijuana cultivation has a very short history as a legitimate pursuit. Sure, there are people who have been growing large crops illegally for years and many more smaller, quasi-legal operations in Amsterdam and select other locations. But there is no LinkedIn for pot farmers; the best you can do is Craigslist, maybe through High Times or specialty organizations.

Since its roots are in the illegal world, experienced growers are, by default, experienced criminals. Sourcing expertise in illegal matters is tricky and ripe with misinformation.

Keep your inbox empty with one of these four strategies

No matter how much time we spend trying to optimize our inbox — from batch checking messages to adding bells and whistles — email takes over our lives. Looking at my stats from last month, I received and processed over 10,000 emails (eek!), so finding the right way tomanage all this online correspondence has been critical for my day-to-day sanity.

Turns out, though, the "right way" to manage email depends a lot on your own personal style. I've rounded up some of the most popular and successful strategies so that you can decide which one is best for you:

Rising marijuana sales leave pot shops flush with cash they can't deposit

Two months from now, on July 1, Oregon will become the fourth state to allow residents to legally purchase marijuana for recreational use. In anticipation of legalization, the governing body that will oversee marijuana licensing and sales is preparing for something unexpected: A huge influx of cold, hard cash.

Legal marijuana in states like Colorado and Washington have surpassed revenue expectations in their first few years. But when marijuana businesses try to pay their taxes, the federal law that makes marijuana illegal limits their access to financial institutions.

Navigating the Regulatory Map of Cannabis

The United States cannabis market is, in a word, complicated. As opportunity expands and legislation eases, the states are divided on how to move forward. Some still resist the industry as a legal entity, others accept it conditionally, and a few are breaking down barriers left and right. Changes in federal law could open up the possibility of more cohesion, but the currently fragmented market adoption means vendors, retailers, patients and consumers have to navigate tricky legislation.

Violent Robbery At Medical Pot Dispensary Caught On Camera

DENVER (CBS4) – Surveillance video shows the distress during a violent armed robbery last week at a Denver medical marijuana dispensary.

Shortly after 9 a.m. last Wednesday four men broke into the High St Cannabis Station near the intersection of East 14th Avenue and High Street.

The owner said one man ordered a female employee to the ground, then fired two shots at another worker who tried to run into the alley. The shots missed, and the robbers ran out with edibles and hash oil.

“Somebody got shot or I thought it was a crash or something like that,” said neighbor Oscar Saucedo.

He saw two of the suspects get out of a dark blue Nissan Armada. He said the crime has rocked the neighborhood.
