Denver halts some pot sales over bug spray worries

DENVER — City officials temporarily halted the sale of millions of dollars worth of legal marijuana because of concerns that unapproved pesticides or fungicides have contaminated it.

This past Friday alone, city officials placed a "hold" on 60,000 plants at a single grow facility here after consulting with state agriculture inspectors and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. They previously had placed crops from six other facilities on similar holds, allowing the plants to keep growing but blocking their sale to consumers.

Some growers have destroyed their crops instead of waiting for test results, which are still pending.

The Surprising State That Could Be the Next to Legalize Weed

No, not California nor Nevada, and not one of the New England states.

It's looking more and more likely that voters in a key battleground state will be voting on marijuana legalization in November, and recent polling suggests it could win. That's thisNovember, not November 2016.

The state is Ohio, where a controversial pot legalization initiative is already well on the way to qualifying for the ballot, and its backers—or should we say investors?--have the cash on hand to make sure it does.

Yes, pot should be legal. But it shouldn’t be sold for a profit.

The new legal industry excludes the same people who suffered most under the old laws.

Medical marijuana caregivers challenge ordinance in York

The town of York is being sued by a group of medical marijuana caregivers who claim that a recently adopted town ordinance violates state confidentiality laws.

Lynne Williams, an attorney based in Bar Harbor, is representing the caregivers, who lease space at a marijuana growing facility on White Birch Lane in York.

In the lawsuit, filed this week in York County Superior Court, the caregivers are referred to only as John Doe 1-8 because they have been granted anonymity under state law.

California: New pot growing regulations enter 30-day comment period

The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has issued a draft of a marijuana cultivation waiver that would allow growers to come into compliance with state water regulations, regardless of the legality of marijuana under state or federal law.

The proposed regulations containing provisions for a waiver is in a 30 day public comment period. If the proposal is finalized as drafted, sometime this year all private property growers, with more than six plants, must apply for this waiver if their operation could impact water quality. This process provides a pathway into compliance for growers in an otherwise totally unregulated industry.

Proposed legislation seeks to let marijuana businesses open bank accounts

A bill introduced into the House Wednesday seeks to legitimize marijuana businesses by allowing them to open bank accounts, according to multiple reports.

The “Marijuana Business Access Banking Act” is sponsored by Rep. Ed Perlmutter (D-Colorado) and would allow banks, which are currently prohibited by the federal government from doing business with marijuana businesses, to get a so-called “safe harbor” exemption and legally offer bank accounts to marijuana shops.

Marijuana is currently still labeled as a Schedule I drug by the Drug Enforcement Agency, making it a federal crime for institutions to handle money made from its sale.
