Task force chair says ban on home-grown pot paternalistic, unenforceable

Banning Canadians from growing a few marijuana plants in their homes or backyards once recreational cannabis is legalized would be both paternalistic and unenforceable, former federal justice minister Anne McLellan says.

McLellan, who chaired the federal task force on cannabis legalization, offered that opinion Wednesday during an appearance before the Senate’s social affairs committee, which is examining the federal government’s bill to legalize pot use.

The bill would allow individuals to grow up to four plants per dwelling — a provision that has raised concerns among senators, apartment and condo owners, municipalities and police.

'Weed Myths' campaign aims to get young people asking questions about cannabis

Campaign tackles assumptions about how cannabis use affects driving and mental health.

Posters at Halifax bus stops and hockey rinks with the banner Weed Myths are part of a new public awareness initiative about cannabis use, not an anti-drug crusade, says the director of the program behind the campaign.

The strategy, which includes short videos on social media, is to motivate young people to ask questions about cannabis, says  Dr. Phil Tibbo, director of the Nova Scotia Early Psychosis Program.

Weed Myths looks at some assumptions people make about cannabis and driving as well as its effect on mental health.

Young people were consulted about the message and the way it is being delivered, Tibbo said.

THC and DUIs: as legalization approaches, will our roads be safe?

Perfect 'weed breathalyzer' may never come.

When it comes to drivers impaired by marijuana, there are still a lot of unanswered questions in B.C. — even with legalization still expected to take place this summer.

The tools, training and method of determining whether a driver is impaired by marijuana are still not certain.

Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said last week the province is still waiting for information from the federal government on those details, including what devices will be used as breathalyser equivalents during roadside stops.

"It's something we believe needs to be communicated to the provinces, like, ASAP," Farnworth said. "The feds have told us there is technology they are confident in, but we are yet to know exactly what it is."

County in the midst of a green gold rush

Marijuana is beginning to account for a noticeable share of “Ontario’s Garden.”

During his state-of-the-county address this week, Mayor Charlie Luke said it is full steam ahead for industrial marijuana production in Norfolk County.

New capacity is being added all the time. Some is devoted to the medicinal market while others are preparing to produce recreational marijuana once it becomes legal in Canada this summer.

Mayor Luke delivered the annual state-of-the-county address during a breakfast meeting Wednesday at the Greens at Renton. The event was sponsored by the Simcoe & District Chamber of Commerce.

In his speech, Luke shared progress reports on three operations representing millions of dollars in investment.

Aquaponics is the future of growing weed

Green Relief is betting that aquaponics is the best method for growing medical cannabis that is healthy for both your body and the environment.

Inside a concrete bunker jutting out of a grassy hillside, magenta lights cast a neon glow above rows of plants. The glassy eyes of tilapia peer out of the windows of fish tanks the size of above-ground swimming pools. There’s the peaceful sound of bubbles surfacing. Then there’s the sweet, sharp scent of cannabis plants flowering, their branches slumping with orangish-purple buds.

How marijuana’s THCV can positively impact your life

When you think about cannabis and its counterparts, what comes to mind? Perhaps you think of two of the most well-known cannabinoids—THC or CBD. Or, maybe you envision traditionally smoking cannabis and the effects that come with it. However, you might think of the medicinal properties this plant contains, especially if you consume cannabis for medical purposes. Although THC and CBD are both well-known and commonly used cannabinoids, the cannabis plant contains many other medically beneficial cannabinoids including THCV. Although THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) is similar to THC, it contains its own unique benefits. Read on to learn more about THCV and how you could potentially benefit from the consumption of this cannabinoid.
