These Canadian cannabis tech companies will be hot this summer

This summer, Canada will likely pass monumental federal legislation to fully legalize cannabis for recreational purposes. Like U.S. businesses, many Canadian cannabis companies have been operating “on the fringes” of the business world because of the federal cannabis status. Very soon, this will no longer be the case in Canada. Here are some businesses that are poised and ready to take the cannabis tech world by storm.

Toronto vape company Green Tank poised to cash in on cannabis legalization

Dustin and Corey Koffler, brothers and co-founders of Green Tank Technologies Corp., have been growing their business at breakneck speed over the past year – and the pace is unlikely to slow down as cannabis legalization approaches.

One year ago, Green Tank, a Toronto-based startup that designs vaporizers for cannabis-oil producers, had its first product ready, but no employees and no sales. Today, the company serves 60 clients in four countries and has hired 16 employees, most of whom work out of a converted industrial space in the city’s west end.

Provinces need more info about marijuana impairment testing technology

British Columbia may have unveiled its plan for regulating recreational marijuana, but the enforcement and testing for drug-impaired driving remains hazy.

Solicitor General Mike Farnworth says the provinces need to hear "ASAP" from the federal government about what technology might be approved in testing for drug-impairment.

Currently, specially trained drug recognition officers conduct field sobriety tests based largely on visual assessments, rather than testing of bodily fluids.

Retired RCMP officer Steven Maxwell, who has trained officers on the field tests in Ontario and Quebec, says he believes recognition tests are very accurate — when conducted properly.

Roadside drug tests will be Canadians' new normal when weed's legal

It's important to understand what drugged driving really means, what tools police have and what Canadians must keep in mind behind the wheel.

As cannabis moves closer to legalization, Canadians are asking themselves what it means for them. If the recent Toronto Star article is any indication, one area that's coming under greater scrutiny is the issue of drugged driving.

Can genetics help explain teen drug use?

Parents and adults spend a lot of time worrying about the influence of friends and peers when it comes to teen substance use – drinking alcohol, binge drinking, marijuana use and other illicit drugs. Is it all about an adolescent’s environment, their friends, peers and family, or is there a genetic component that drives their desire for risk taking and novelty? Teen substance use typically begins in early adolescence and increases linearly – both in terms of prevalence rates and frequency of use – until late adolescence, when a majority of teens report prior use of alcohol or illicit drugs. Conventional wisdom would argue that part of the reason substance use increases in teens is due to their experiences outside of the home, such as their friends and peers.
