Niagara College Obtains Health Canada Licence To Cultivate Industrial Hemp

Niagara College's Commercial Cannabis Production program now has a licence from Health Canada to cultivate industrial hemp.

Students will be studying plant genetics, seeding and germination, flower identification, harvesting, and drying hemp.

Dean of Business, Tourism and Environment Alan Unwin says,  "The uses and the industries for the hemp plant and the cannabis plant are quite different so this will help them when they graduate. It's staying on top of things that we're seeing in the industry."

Production is already underway after students grew a small field in the college's hop yard over the summer.

Hemp farming challenges projected to give way to growth

Eustis, Florida — 21 years oldst-Century greenhouse, for ancient crops. In the case of Glen Treadwell Treadwell farm, The crop is hemp.

“I like the idea that it can be done all year round,” he said. “It’s a plant that catches you.”

His family has been farming in Florida for over a century, but recently hemp has been added.

“It’s one of the hardest plants to grow,” he said. “You need to have the right process, and that’s what we had to learn, people taught us, and we treat it to others I’m trying to teach you the right way. “

Mental Health Commission of Canada and partners invest $2 million towards researching mental health effects of cannabis use

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) and its partners have announced the investment of $2 million toward targeted research on the mental health effects of cannabis use among diverse populations in Canada.

The joint investment will fund 18 research projects with a focus on subpopulations that are under-represented in current research.

Study Shows Growing Cannabis Uses Less Water than Previously Thought

A study from the University of California Berkeley Cannabis Research Center has determined that licensed cannabis cultivation operations use less water than previously thought. Researchers from the center began studying water use by cannabis growers in 2017, following the legalization of recreational marijuana in California the previous year.
