If you are at all interested in cannabis as a growing industry you are already aware that while the US Federal Government labels marijuana a schedule 1 drug with no medicinal benefits, they also hold a patent titled “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants” which was awarded in 2003. And while possession of the flower remains a serious criminal offence, President Obama and the US Attorney General have decided to allow individual States to determine their own set of rules within their borders.

With the Apple Watch now fully released, developers are fast at work linking their current apps to the Apple Watch or creating entirely new types of apps to make use of the Apple Watch. Less than a year ago, Canary, a mobile marketplace startup, was referred to as the “Uber for marijuana.” The company was founded to cater to medical marijuana patients who were not always in close proximity to a dispensary, or who had trouble getting around due to illness. Canary was also valuable to dispensaries, which benefitted from reaching more customers.

How could a company with the capital and resources of Google have miscalculated the demand for Google Glass? Why would a conglomerate the size of Blockbuster not recognize that online movie rentals and sales were quickly outpacing the demand for DVD’s?

The answer is the inability or lack of desire to change.

I’m not referring to the ability to introduce change, but specifically the ability to predict, respond and adapt to changes being thrust upon the business. Consider the three most fundamental areas of business that influence the profitability and viability of any business.

It is often thought that the economic future for recreational marijuana is relatively limited. The people who use it for fun will eventually move from the black market to the legal market and perhaps into other forms of consumption, but the absolute number will not necessarily increase.

Marijuana’s pharmaceutical future, on the other hand, is a largely unexplored world. Research has been stymied in the United States, but tantalizing clues hint at great potential for both medicine and investors.

Outside the main conference sessions much of the chatter among attendees was about whether Facebook or Google was more powerful in terms of reaching the audiences they need. Both have audiences in the billions, but Facebook seems to be innovating faster than Google right now.

There was less talk about Twitter.
