In The Bay Area, The Farm-To-Table And Legal Cannabis Movements Come

Transparency is a prominent force in today’s food industry. While farmers markets are hardly new, the attachment to organic, locally grown products have surfaced in other industries throughout San Francisco and Oakland–namely marijuana. These pot-friendly cities have seen a rise in cannabis delivery systems and sampling parties. In late February Flow Kana, “the world’s first farm-to-table cannabis delivery platform,” launched in San Francisco, foreshadowing the next generation of a once taboo trade. By the end of June the company will also serve Oakland and Berkeley.

Medical marijuana: Sick, dying, and waiting for doctors

Kathleen and Rick Blake lost their 8-year-old son Michael to leukemia in 1988, four years after his diagnosis.

Last year, their family was again struck by cancer when doctors diagnosed their daughter Jessica with glioblastoma multiforme, a brain tumor.

Determined to help Jessica, the Blakes want her to start taking medical cannabis in July, when qualified patients will be able to legally use marijuana for the first time. "We're looking for hope, because conventional medicine has not given us any," Rick Blake said.

But even though medical marijuana use is now legal in Minnesota and the state Department of Health has started registering the thousands of patients who will be eligible to use it, doctors are wary of signing up patients.

Medical Marijuana Oil Hits new Roadblocks in WI

A Wisconsin committee is taking up a bill that would allow the legal use of a marijuana extract to treat severe seizure disorders, but it’s hitting new roadblocks.

It’s called CBD oil and right now, it’s legal in Wisconsin, but that doesn’t mean it’s available. The oil is still illegla under federal law unless doctors get an FDA waiver to prescribe it and so far, none in Wisconsin have been willing to get one.

“She was on everything, Depakote, every pharmaceutical you could imagine to treat her seizures,” said Steve Figi of Menasha, “[her seizures] were at a rate of 20-40 grand mal seizures a day, when she was 4-and-a-half-years-old.”

Combating Occurrence & Costs of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

A report in the March/April issue of the Journal of Addiction Medicine finds that the costs of treatment for babies with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS)—symptoms and complications related to withdrawal from the opioid pain medication to which they were exposed in utero—have increased dramatically as more infants are born to mothers with dependence on prescription pain medications. The authors cite the findings in support of their recommendations for more intensive screening of pregnant women for substance abuse.

Currently its legal prescribe cannabis in 23 states and DC for certain types of medical conditions. However, the road ahead is still not clear. Even though the state medical marijuana laws permits the prescription of the herb, the federal law still bans usage of marijuana medical or otherwise. The good news is Attorney General Eric Holder said that the federal law will not be enacted upon patients suffering from serious illnesses or any caregiver who is complying with the state law. He also added that the Controlled Substance Act of 2009 that prohibits the usage of cannabis is directed towards drug trafficker and people who use it for recreational purposes. Now, where does the law stand for patients who need this herb for medical purposes?

NY State, US can do more on medical marijuana

In the past two years Gov. Andrew Cuomo has come a long way in amending his once unsupportive views about medical marijuana, but it is not far enough.

New York has become the 23rd state to legalize medical marijuana in some form, and this should help those New Yorkers suffering from cancer, glaucoma and other serious illnesses. But if the program works as intended, it should be expanded.

Friday was the deadline for businesses to apply for only five licenses that will be granted to manufacture and dispense the drug statewide.
