Despite a pop culture reputation for paranoia or the munchies, millions of anxiety patients worldwide are turning to modern formulations of medical marijuana.

Cannabis’ ingredients have been proven to act on nerve cells to dampen anxiety and provide relief to sufferers — no smoke or high required. More and more patients are using sprays that sit under the tongue or medicated food. These products are often non-psychoactive, drawing in seniors, parents professionals and others turned off by a potential stone.

Growing marijuana takes vigilance, even when it’s legal. Like any crop, cannabis plants are prone to pests and disease—from tiny leaf-sucking spider mites, which can spawn a new generation in less than a week, to powdery mildew, a fungus that forms a talcum-like coating on leaves and spreads rapidly through greenhouses. For every other agricultural product, there is a relatively clear solution: Find a pesticide labeled for the specific plant or setting, and apply it according to the instructions.

What makes a successful marijuana business? Depending on your position in the market, this question will bring up a multitude of answers. To me, as an academic and accountant, success for a business in the marijuana industry is one that can produce a reasonable and sustainable profit. Henry Ford was an innovator ahead of his time. By 1941, Ford had been working on ways to invent more fuel efficient and durable vehicles that could operate with alternative fuel sources. He came up with a hemp-bodied prototype automobile, which he foresaw running on alcohol generated from agricultural products such as Hemp.

Despite the breakthrough, hemp production was inhibited by draconian marijuana laws designed to protect fossil fuels and the production of standard textiles and materials. Unfortunately, mass production of the hemp car never happened.

As a delegate, Steve Schuh opposed making medical marijuana available in Maryland. As county executive, he now has to figure out how Anne Arundel County will deal with a law that will soon allow just that.

To consider what to do, Schuh last week convened a roundtable of local officials.

Applications for licenses to grow, process and dispense medical marijuana will become available from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission starting in September.

But the new state measure gives local jurisdictions a say on regulating such businesses through their planning and zoning laws. That leaves county officials mulling the impact on residents and on local government.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife helicopter circled over steep timberland in Humboldt County’s coastal mountains, prowling for potential water diversions and environmental damage caused by what is arguably the state’s most lucrative agricultural product: marijuana.

The problems weren’t hard to find.

The pot farms below sprawled out with factory-like orderliness. From the air, the rows of budding plants resembled citrus orchards. Leveled terraces supported plastic-lined greenhouses capable of producing multiple marijuana yields. Giant water tanks stood nearby.

Lt. DeWayne Little, a veteran game warden with a muscular build and a shaved head, snapped photos of the clearings. The view unsettled him.

For awhile now Oregon’s Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) has had a distinction that no other state’s medical marijuana program has – it allows non-Oregon residents to become a patient or grower in the program. There are multiple states that recognize out of state medical marijuana cards, but Oregon will allow you to become a patient in Oregon (but has never recognized out of state medical marijuana cards). There are not a lot of out of state patients in the OMMP, but there are some nonetheless. Per Oregon Live:

A new initiative which would re-legalize marijuana use for adults in Florida is gaining interest. On August 29, 2015, Floridians for Freedom increased their Facebook fan page interest by 54 percent as Libertarians, Democrats, Republicans and independents began signing up to volunteer for the new organization. Yesterday, volunteers began going out to get petitions signed so the initiative will be able to go before voters on the November 2016 ballot.
