Three men from Great Britain have been arrested after raiding a local, legally licensed industrial hemp farm thinking they were snatching pounds of free pot. The three were arrested after a Facebook post detailed the location of a field packed full of wild-growing cannabis – only it wasn’t.

A “large number” of trespassers descended on the West Sussex hemp field after the erroneous post, which led people to believe the hills were alive with sweet, sticky buds.

Police found various forms of marijuana-related paraphernalia at the farm, where many of the intruders had attempted to smoke parts of the plant. Two sacks stuffed with the hemp were also found.

UK: Cannabis petition forces MPs to consider debating legalisation

A petition calling for the total legalisation of cannabis in the UK has been signed by more than 125,000 people in just four days.

The response to an appeal hosted on the government’s official e-petitions website means MPs must now consider debating the issue in parliament. All petitions that reach 100,000 signatures are given such consideration.

The petition’s success comes after a persistent campaign on social media, with activist-linked Twitter accounts around the world calling on UK-resident marijuana smokers to sign up.

Hellraiser Keith Richards has revealed he still often kickstarts his day smoking cannabis – aged 71.

The Rolling Stones legend told how he has been unable to kick his weed habit despite giving up his other vices.

He admitted: “I smoke regularly, an early morning joint. Strictly Californian.”

Rocker Keith told MOJO magazine: “One of the most pleasant things to watch is a map of America [showing States where cannabis is legal ], where it goes, green... green... green.

"Whether it’s a good thing in the long run, I don’t know.”

UK CANNABIS LEGALISATION DEBATE: WE NEED TO CATCH UP

er the weekend, following a strong social media campaign, a petition calling for the UK government to consider debating the legalisation and regulation of cannabis reached 100,000 signatures. At the time the research for this article started, the number had gotten to 110,532, and is still climbing.

According to James Richard Owen, the individual who started the petition, “legalising cannabis could bring in £900m in taxes every year, save £400m on policing cannabis and create over 10,000 new jobs.” This would mean an extra £1.3 billion into the hands of the tax payer, even before the tax receipts come in from the alleged 10,000 jobs created.

UK: Minor cannabis users "not priority"

Derbyshire's police and crime commissioner has said minor cannabis users are not a "priority" for the force.

Alan Charles has said austerity cuts to police budgets had forced Derbyshire police to reassess its priorities.

In an interview with the Guardian, Mr Charles said: "The severity of the funding cuts mean that we can't keep policing every single issue as we have done in the past.

"If people are using cannabis discreetly in their own homes, in private, I would not expect the chief to make that a priority.”

He said the force would always target organised criminals producing large amounts of drugs.

UK: Our police have gone to pot

Why on earth are Durham police no longer going to prosecute cannabis farmers?

Despite the medical evidence that cannabis causes psychosis, Durham police have announced that they will no longer prosecute those growing “small quantities” for personal consumption. Apparently, numerous other forces take the same view, but haven’t had the front to admit it.

Durham takes us one small step towards a sensible policy on drugs

And the NHS could do with a dose of common sense

New figures show that more than a million people aged between 16 and 24 used cannabis in the past year. Now, those in the North-east who keep pot plants – the hallucinogenic kind rather than a Busy Lizzie – no longer fear a knock on their door and a trip to the police station.

Police rule out going easy on cannabis users who grow their own drugs at home in Coventry

Police in Coventry say there are no plans to stop prosecuting low-level cannabis growers after another force said it was no longer a priority.

Durham Constabulary said they would now only step in if cannabis growing was blatant, or on a commercial scale.

Instead small scale growers could be cautioned and have their plants removed so they don’t face prosecution.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said there were no plans to follow Durham’s lead.

Should we relax our stance on cannabis growing?

She said: “The decision to seek a prosecution around cannabis production very much depends on the evidence, but there is no specific policy in place not to prosecute these type of offences.”
