office

State officials promised a full regulatory review of the proposed purchase of medical marijuana company Etain Health, which has a dispensary in Ulster and a growing operation in Chestertown, near Lake George, by a Canadian cannabis acquisition and investment firm RIV Capital for $247 million.

“As per New York’s Cannabis Law, this proposed transaction, with respect specifically to the registration held by Etain in the State of New York, will undergo a regulatory review and approval process after a complete and adequate application is submitted,” state Office of Cannabis Management Spokesperson Freeman Klopott said last week.

Selling Marijuana on Tribal Lands, a Legal Gray Area

cannabis buds on display

It doesn’t take long after entering the St. Regis Mohawk reservation to see a glimpse of the future of marijuana sales in the state of New York.

The reservation — a sovereign tribal land in the eyes of the government — currently holds the distinction of hosting New York’s only overt outlets for recreational sales of the drug: nearly a dozen dispensaries offering an array of joints, gummies, edibles and tinctures, which imbue this far-flung, northern-border territory with a shaggy, entrepreneurial energy. -Writes Jesse McKinley of New York Times

What Buffalo Niagara can learn from Canada's cannabis industry experiment

As New York State gets ready to kick off the legal pot industry, cannabis industry professionals from Ontario have a few suggestions to bear in mind.

Put simply, they said: Learn from our mistakes.

It’s been three years since the Cannabis Act of 2018 legalized the growth and sale of marijuana in Canada, and the city of Hamilton has seen both the positives and the negatives from the law and the regulatory framework that was put in place.

The city went from about 80 illicit pot businesses to more than 100 legal retail stores.

What's with the large shipments of marijuana at the Canadian border?

The manifest said the cargo in the tractor-trailer that pulled up at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge on Jan. 20 was "phone accessories." But a search inside the trailer turned up something quite different – multiple pallets with boxes filled with vacuum-sealed bags of nearly a thousand pounds of marijuana, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

A few days later, another search of a truck at the Lewiston bridge led to the discovery of 1,070 pounds of marijuana. That shipment was manifested as "cardboard."

At the Peace Bridge on March 11, a shipment of "empty plastic bottles" turned out to be 655 pounds of marijuana.

Can Canadian Cannabis market predict New York State marijuana profits?

The legalization of recreational marijuana in Canada in 2018 brought a lot of excitement, but not necessarily results.

"It's not what people thought it would be, at least not yet," Kyle Murray, Vice Dean at the University of Alberta School of Business, said.

Buffalo a key part of flow of Canadian black market marijuana into United States

It’s a high-stakes cat and mouse game.

Some 2,500 to 3,000 tractor-trailer trucks cross the Peace Bridge from Canada into the United States each day.

Which ones are carrying black market Canadian marijuana?

“Our officers are trained, have inspection skills and gut instincts but we also have a lot of technology,” says Rose Brophy, director of field operations for the Buffalo Field Office for U.S. Customs and Border Security.

And the agency has needed all those tools.
