Pro-Marijuana Group Warns Against "Excessive" Taxation in Massachusetts

A group pushing for a 2016 ballot question on legalizing the recreational use of marijuana is warning against imposing excessive taxation or fees on the sale of pot.

Bay State Repeal on Wednesday released a statement saying it welcomes a bill filed by more than a dozen Massachusetts lawmakers that would allow marijuana to be taxed and regulated like alcohol. The bill also would let adults 21 years or older possess and grow limited amounts of marijuana.

But the pro-marijuana group says if taxes and fees are too high that will force up the cost of pot and help maintain a black market in the state. It says that could have the unintended consequence of giving minors the ability to continue obtaining marijuana illegally.

These Five States Could Legalize Marijuana in 2016

Nevada's vote is set and advocates believe they can get similar measures on the ballot in four other states

On Friday, Nevada lawmakers adjourned without voting on a petition submitted by residents to legalize marijuana and regulate it like alcohol. That means the initiative is going on the ballot in 2016, making Nevada the first state to officially be voting on pot legalization in the next election.

The art, and science, behind growing medical marijuana

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. — A tiny spider mite is all it could take to cripple Seth Bock’s business.

Bock grows marijuana, legally, for a living, and the peril presented by just one small insect illustrates how difficult it can be to establish a thriving dispensary.

For marijuana dispensaries, it’s never as easy as sticking a few seeds in the ground and watching the plants, and the profits, grow. “There are so many moving parts to this business,” Bock said. His is one of three medical marijuana dispensaries in Rhode Island, and his experience provides vital lessons for companies in Massachusetts that have won licenses to grow and sell marijuana. The first is expected to open in April.

Latest Patient Counts in Emerging Medical Marijuana Markets: Nevada, Illinois, Massachusetts

Medical marijuana dispensaries are slated to launch in several new states this year, accelerating the MMJ industry’s march across the country.

But it’s difficult to determine the potential size of these markets, as it will largely depend on how many patients register for medical cannabiscards.

So far, patient totals are relatively low in these states.

Just 200 people have signed up for cards in Delaware, where the first and only dispensary allowed is scheduled to open this spring. That represents a miniscule .02% of the population.

In Support of Massachusetts Medical Cannabis Patients on Eve of Protest March

Bay State Repeal issued a statement in support of Massachusetts patients’ efforts to gain access to medical marijuana, and to support patients’ interests in the campaign to fully end prohibition, while avoiding the kind of fiasco the bureaucracy-heavy 2012 medical marijuana regime has predictably become. This Tuesday, Oct. 14, patients will hold a protest rally […]

Boston Globe Opposes Over-Regulation of Cannabis in Massachusetts

BOSTON, MA — This week, the Boston Globe came out with a surprising editorial saying that when it comes to marijuana legalization, the less regulation the better: Should Massachusetts eventually legalize marijuana completely, it shouldn’t spawn another regulatory monster in the process… Anyone should be able to grow or sell legalized marijuana, subject to whatever […]

The Nose Does Not Always Know: Smelling Cannabis Is Not Probable Cause

As history is made and states across the nation set out to enact some form of marijuana legislation, the requirement for probable cause is bound to change as well. Currently, there is a very low threshold that needs to be met to allow a police officer to search a person, car or house. However, that is all about to change.
