Lawmakers in Italy have taken a bold stance on marijuana legalization, signing a motion Monday to legalize cannabis across the country, according to the ANSA news agency. The proposal, introduced by Sen. Benedetto Della Vedova, was backed by 60 politicians, mostly from the ruling center-left Democratic Party but with some support from the right. Della Vedova himself, a senator who also serves as the deputy foreign minister, was a longtime member of Italy's small but influential Radical Party, which has campaigned since the 1970s to liberalize marijuana laws.

In Italy, living in Tuscany or Veneto makes a big difference for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Those in Tuscany have access to pain-relieving drugs based on marijuana, while those in Veneto don’t. Because the first Italian regions to have approved decrees for the regulation of cannabinoids have chosen two very different models for prescribing and access to these medicines.

"When I started to take care of marijuana in 1967, I had no doubt that it was a very harmful drug which, unfortunately, was being used by a growing number of young people unaware that they could not understand or did not listen to the warnings about its dangers. My intention was to describe scientifically the nature and degree of this danger. In the three following years, while browsing the scientific literature, medical and profane, my opinion began to change. I came to understand that I, like many other people in this country, I was subjected to brainwashing. My beliefs about the dangers of marijuana had little empirical foundation. When I completed the research I became convinced that cannabis was considerably less harmful than alcohol and tobacco, legal drugs most commonly used.

In recent weeks the debate on legalization in Italy seems to have increased, at least in terms of quantity of lines dedicated to the topic in the newspapers. And after the explicit statements in favor of legalization by Umberto Veronesi and the undersecretary of the government Renzi Benedetto Della Vedova, we are now recording the reaction of the usual bastions of Prohibition in Italy: Carlo Giovanardi and the community of San Patrignano, who have joined for the occasion the "brilliant" analysis on the topic by Letizia Moratti.
