International attention in hemp and medical cannabis in the European Parliament

International attention was raised yesterday in the conference held inside the European Parliament in Brussels on hemp and medical cannabis hosted by SYRIZA MEP, Stelios Kouloglou. 

Prominent figures from the world of politics, international organizations and civil society and many participants from all over Europe to the US participated in a rich and constructive debate on the therapeutic value of cannabis and the multiple uses resulting from the cultivation of this plant helping thus to boost the employment and the economy.

The European magazine Politico announced the conference with a special report entitled “is growing hemp the way to save the Greek economy?”

After a long period of debate, the federal government of Germany recently announced a draft of its medical cannabis Bill which is titled “Cannabis as Medicine.” Political decision makers seem to realize the medical benefits of Cannabis and have begun moving towards a regulated use for therapeutic purposes.

International medical marijuana research center announced

Members of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), KOPAC and Dioscorides Global Holdings (DGH) were joined by the Minister of Health for the Czech Republic recently to announce the establishment of a new research center, the International Cannabis and Cannabinoid Institute (ICCI) – intended to foster evidence-based exploration with a modern scientific approach to refine the therapeutic applicability of cannabis-based medicines in the Czech Republic. ICCI will identify, coordinate and support global research priorities for the advancement of cannabis and cannabinoid treatments through a multidisciplinary evidence based approach that incorporates innovative tools and approaches.

Poll: Majority Of Americans Support Marijuana Legalization

The majority of Americans support the legalization of marijuana, according to the latest poll.

The percentage of Americans who support marijuana legalization rose four points to 52 percent from when YouGov last asked the same question back in March 2015.

More than half of adults under the age of 65 support legalization but there is still strong opposition from those aged 65 and over. Democrats were overwhelmingly in favor of a more relaxed position on cannabis, with 66 percent supporting an end to prohibition.

Marijuana Use, Dependency can be Treated by This Drug but With Potent Health Risks

In order to supplement the existing psychosocial treatments on substance abuse, the researchers from Brown University conducted a study on the efficacy of the drug topiramate for treating the use of cannabis in adolescents. 

The findings of their study showed that by incorporating the use of the drug topiramate in the treatment together with psychological counseling, particularly the motivational enhancement therapy (MET), the use of marijuana among the youth smokers was suppressed in a significant level as compared to a treatment, which only involves counseling alone, says a public release from EurekAlert.
