Investors bet on recreational pot

Europe’s cannabis startups are raking in investor funds at an accelerating pace on the prospect of recreational marijuana becoming legal in Germany. Medical use — already legal — is also seeing tremendous growth.

After a slowdown in venture-capital deals in 2020, the cannabis industry recovered last year, and 2022 is also off to a good start as investors position themselves to cash in on the region’s promising cannabis market, according to Stephen Murphy, co-founder and chief executive officer of Prohibition Partners, a research firm focused on marijuana.

Negotiators for the Social Democrats, Greens and pro-business Free Democrats are hammering out the details, including conditions under which the sale and use of recreational cannabis would be allowed and regulated, according to people familiar with the talks, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

Future of Pot Market Just Got Brighter, & These 2 Pot Stocks Could Rise

Marijuana stock investors have benefited immensely from Canadian pot legalization, and that’s a relatively tiny market.

Think about what will happen when a huge economy legalizes cannabis. For pot stocks, that will most likely generate massive share-price growth.

Two marijuana companies in particular are poised to benefit from the possible German marijuana legalization: Canopy Growth Corp (NYSE:CGC) and Aurora Cannabis Inc (NASDAQ:ACB).

Legal Woes: German Marketing of Medical Cannabis

flag of Germany

The German process is unlike anything foreigners have ever experienced before—with twists and turns at every step that frequently defy logic.

The German medical cannabis market is one of the largest in the world. Indeed, as of 2021, it is not only the largest market in Europe, but also responsible for driving cultivation plans across many sunnier and lower labor cost locales. This is true of both countries in the European Union (EU) and further flung spots, all hoping to export cannabis to a country, which so far has not, by design, been able to domestically source the medical cannabis consumed in the country.

All well and good—but this is the good news.
