Was it because of the marijuana-Cloud?

BERLIN - They seemed euphoric, left at the same time, seemed to come to new insights. The Kreuzberg "MyFest" was on May 1 under a thick cloud of marijuana.

No corner, no road without the sweet grass smell, many of the 40,000 people seemed intoxicated. Is that the reason why the violence faded into the background?

Interior Senator Frank Henkel (CDU): "That was numerically the most peaceful May 1 there has been since the start of the riots in 1987."

45 arrests, 41 of the 6,554 police officers deployed injured slightly, but all remained on duty. Only a few stones and bottles thrown at officers during the "Revolutionary May 1st demonstration".

Henkel: "The spark is not jumping. The dominance of violence be broken. "

'High time' for medical marijuana in Germany

The federal government wants to make cannabis more accessible to sick Germans as a means for pain relief, according to the country's drug representative. 'High time,' say supporters of legalization.

"It is our goal that in the future more people in Germany will be able to receive cannabis as medicine than has been the case until now," Marlene Mortler, the federal government's drug representative said on Tuesday, adding that plans were in the making for legislation that would see insurance companies cover the costs.

"We want to get this law through the Bundestag [lower house of German parliament] by the end of the year so it can take effect in 2016," Mortler said in an interview published in the Welt daily.

EU Cannabis: when prohibition does not equal lower consumption

In Europe, the legislation varied from one country to another. And the most stringent laws do not necessarily produce the best effects.

According to the French Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT), nearly one in two French smoked cannabis. However, France has one of the toughest laws on drug use, even so-called "soft" drugs. In Europe, laws differ. On one hand the countries that decriminalize, are tolerant, do not condemn. And conversely those which are very severe. Scientific studies are struggling to establish links between the laws in force and the actual consumption of drugs. If consumption is sometimes tolerated in different forms, the sale and cultivation of cannabis are of course mostly misdemeanors.

It is on trend these days to support the growing marijuana business model. There are two parts of the discussion – medical marijuana that is now legalized in twenty-three states and the District of Columbia; as well as the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in four states.
