A year into legalized recreational cannabis, and now with the legalization of cannabis edibles on Oct. 17, 2019, employers continue to wrestle with the question of how to strike the right balance between a safe and productive workplace and the privacy and human rights of workers.

As courts and arbitrators continue to clarify (and in some cases, muddy) the law, there are several things we know:

Cannabis in the workplace is no different than any other potentially impairing drug: The overarching question is whether the worker is fit for duty.

It seems that ever since the first study emerged showing that the cannabis plant might be able to prevent tens of thousands of Americans from dropping dead every year from fatal overdoses, we have seen a steady stream of new studies showing conflicting results. To say the science over this concept is all over the map is an understatement.

One of the broad appeals of cannabis edibles is that they won’t have the same strong smell of smoked cannabis, but how will they taste and feel?

If you choose to put on your cannabis chef hat, this will depend on what you make and how you make them.

Decarboxylation

Before adding the good stuff into your batch, you’ve got to decarboxylate it.

That happens when cannabis heats up and releases THC.

A rookie mistake is to add raw cannabis to the mix, which will not only ruin the taste, but likely lead to no high.

To avoid that tragedy, heat up the cannabis first and then add it into the recipe.

But what happens when you want to send some green goodness to a friend in a different city or family in a different province? Is it legal to mail cannabis?

The answer might not be the one you expect.

It turns out, it is completely legal to become the sativa Santa this Christmas — provided you follow a few rules to avoid ending up on the naughty list.

The Canada Post website says you can share “a maximum of 30 grams of dried, recreational cannabis with other adults (age varies by province).”

Montreal teenagers are drinking less and using drugs less frequently than they used to.

And they’re consuming less than their counterparts in the rest of Quebec.

New statistics comparing usage among high school students in 2016-2017 to five years previously show that 41 per cent of Montreal students reported consuming a complete drink (such as a full beer or whole glass of wine) in the previous 12 months, compared to 47 per cent of high school students in the earlier study.

Binge drinking was also down. Among those who reported drinking in the previous year, the percentage who drank heavily in one sitting — four drinks or more for girls, five for boys — dropped to 54 per cent, down from 62 per cent in 2010-2011.

The marijuana stock market has definitely seen better days than those of the past few months. At that time, many companies have seen their values drop down quite substantially. This is not to say that some pot stocks have not witnessed growth in that time. Many of the most unknown companies in the industry have been able to escape the high levels of volatility. These mid and small-cap pot stocks have a much easier time putting through innovation due to the lack of a major bureaucracy that comes with size.

Cannabis products have been legal in Canada for a year now. In 2018, Canada legalized marijuana for recreational purposes. This year, Canada included edibles, beverages, topicals, and concentrates in the second phase of legalization. Deloitte estimates the cannabis beverage market could be worth 529 million Canadian dollars annually in Canada.

LYF Food Technologies Inc., a mass food manufacturer in Canada, is on the verge of receiving a licence to produce cannabis edibles.

The company applied for the licence in February and hopes to have a facility ready in two weeks to start pumping out pot products.

“Our team has worked tirelessly over the last two years to bring this dream to reality, and can now confidently say we are in the last steps of the Health Canada licensing process,” read a statement from Matthew Amado, President and co-founder of LYF.
