Not So Green: How the Weed Industry Is a Glutton for Fossil Fuels

Producing a few pounds of weed can have the same environmental toll as driving across America seven times – harming cities’ and states’ plans to curb emissions.

As he opens the steel door to the jumble of his office, located in a cloistered warehouse on the west side of Denver, Paul Isenbergh is barking down the phone about a duplicitous business rival. He’s wearing a shirt and rust-colored tie. Yards from his desk, rows of drying cannabis plants are strung up on two clothes lines.

Isenbergh spent 30 years as a real estate broker in Florida. When he moved to Denver in 2011, he didn’t even know medicinal marijuana was legal in Colorado.

What’s Next for Marijuana Warehouses?

Taking advantage of an impending boom in industrial space for marijuana growers — notably class-B and class-C warehouses — isn’t as simple as just snatching up properties and signing up tenants.

Does the growing legalization of recreational and medical marijuana represent a pot of gold for industrial real estate? It could, experts say, but only if investors quickly and carefully pounce on opportunities.

Would You Try A Marijuana Facial?

Being a pothead is so en vogue right now, probably because it also can be totally healthy. Healthy enough that there's a spa devoted to the plant. Thank god, because we were tired of trying to claim smoking weed is healthy if you use coconut water instead of regular old tap in our bongs (and we were never quite sure if that was actually healthy for you in the first place).

Medicinal marijuana company doubles revenue but struggles to break even

Sales in the legal marijuana business are blazing hot, brushing $6.7 billion in 2016 -- but projections are expected to climb even higher to as much as $20 billion in sales by 2021, according to cannabis research firm Arcview Market Research.

Despite the uptick in overall sales, the industry is still struggling to find its footing as those in the public space continue to battle turning a profit.

Medical Marijuana Inc. (MJNA) , a $321 million market cap company that claims to be the first publicly traded medicinal cannabis firm, is no different. While doubling revenue over the last year, the company is still struggling to turn a profit.

California marijuana laws set for personal use

If you thought Californians got the final word on marijuana laws after legalizing adult use in November, it’s time to think again.

Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers recently struck a deal on a plan to blend Proposition 64 and medical marijuana laws previously approved by the Legislature. The goal of the more than 100-page piece of legislation is to help create a singular regulatory system governing pot in California.

The bill touches on a wide range of weed issues from rules for delivery companies to the advent of a special events permit that would legalize marijuana festivals.

California looks to boost marijuana, block immigration jails

California lawmakers voted Thursday to set rules for the state's nascent marijuana industry and to quash the growth of federal immigration detention as part of a $125 billion state budget lawmakers approved for the next fiscal year.

Lawmakers sent Gov. Jerry Brown a measure merging the state's longstanding medical marijuana law with the much more permissive rules voters approved last year to legalize pot sales to people 21 and older. The state will develop standards for organic marijuana, allow pot samples at county fairs and permit home deliveries.

Organic Weed? Marijuana Growers Go Green

In the U.S., one square foot of indoor marijuana cultivation uses four times more energy than the same space in a hospital, eight times more energy than a commercial building, and 20 times more energy than a center for religious worship, according to a study by Lewis and Clark College.

But a rising number of people in the fast-growing cannabis industry are trying to reduce their environmental footprint, from energy to water to pesticides. Still, a lack of research and regulation has left an industry that is on track to post $20.2 billion in sales by 2021 in a tough position.

California Governor, Lawmakers Announce $125B Budget Deal

Gov. Jerry Brown and Democratic legislative leaders said Tuesday they have agreed to a $125 billion budget that would expand a tax credit for the working poor, increase spending on safety net programs and boost payments for doctors and dentists.

The budget agreement sets up votes in the state Senate and Assembly on Thursday, the last day for lawmakers to approve a budget without losing pay under a voter-approved ballot measure that withholds lawmakers' paychecks if they don't meet budget deadlines.

The spending plan, which Brown called "balanced and progressive," also includes a one-time payment to the state's largest public-employee pension fund and more money for higher education. It does not reverse spending agreed to last year, as Brown had proposed.
