Alberta diversifying agriculture through hemp fibre processing

The Alberta government is underscoring its focus on building a strong agriculture section, with an eye to creating jobs and attracting investment in value-added processing.

To that end, the province and the federal government have announced more than $300,000 in financial support for the non-profit Alberta Hemp Alliance (AHA). The one-time grant, to be allocated over two years, will help set up a provincial industry association for hemp processing through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Should Alberta weed retailers be able to sell online? Provincial regulator wants to know

COVID-19 has delivered a hard hit to many different types of businesses across Alberta and, indeed, the country. Would revising the rules governing cannabis retail in the province offer businesses a cushion and smoother transition to the new normal?

That’s what Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) is looking to find out with the release of a new survey this week. The short survey asks retail businesses about two things: should private-sector cannabis retailers be allowed to sell marijuana online and should they be permitted to sell non-cannabis items, such as clothing.

Hempcrete: Alberta company uses hemp to build tiny homes

An Alberta-based company is capitalizing on a budding hemp industry by turning the versatile plant into a main ingredient in the construction of tiny homes.

Christina Goodvin, owner of tiny homes and greenhouse design firm Goodvin Designs, uses hempcrete — a mixture of wood hemp shafts, a lime-based binder and water — as wall insulation in her tiny homes. Once it's set, the fibrous blocks can be placed inside dry wall, under floors or beneath a roof.

"It's basically a way to manage moisture in the walls," she told CBC's Edmonton AM on Thursday.

"It's great for any extreme climate actually, so in our northern climate, it's a great alternative."

Alberta study shows reduced neural activity in zebrafish exposed to THC, CBD or both

Zebrafish exposed to THC in the earliest stages of their development saw a 70 per cent dive in neural activity later in life and the decrease, at over 70 per cent, was starker when they were immersed in CBD, the University of Alberta reports.

If the same thing happens with humans, the researchers suggest that the findings could have implications for prenatal development in humans, an article posted on the university’s website notes.

Alcanna to spin off retail arm to YSS with focus on cheaper pot

Alcanna Inc. said Monday it is spinning off its cannabis retailer division and merging it with YSS Corp. in an all-stock deal that would value the combined company at about $130 million.

The new company is expected to be renamed Nova Cannabis Inc. and will rebrand most of its retail footprint to Value Buds, a move that acknowledges the growing demand for cheaper cannabis in the Canadian recreational market.

"This new offering, new Nova Cannabis, is really laser-focused on a segment of the marketplace that's proven to exist -- and that's the value-conscious consumer," said Darren Karasiuk, who will be the chief executive officer of the combined company and is a former chief commercial officer for Aurora Cannabis  Inc., in a broadcast interview.
