RCMP seize $430K worth of marijuana near Maple Creek

REGINA — The RCMP has uncovered a large marijuana grow-op in a small community in southeast Saskatchewan.

A total of 433 pot plants were found over the weekend inside a residence in the village of Richmound, located about 450 kilometres west of Regina. According to an RCMP news release, the plants had a street value of more than $430,000 — a sizable cash crop for an agricultural area, about 80 kilometres north of Maple Creek near the Alberta border.

RCMP said the investigation was prompted by a traffic stop in Richmound on Friday by members of the Leader detachment. What was described in the release as “a significant amount” of marijuana was seized from the vehicle. An adult male and female were arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Alberta's commercial cannabis operation harvests first crop

Tiny sprouts in a sterile, virtually scent-free room will someday become 18-inch medical marijuana plants, packed into an almost unbearably bright “flowering bay.”

Aurora Cannabis, Alberta’s first commercial marijuana production facility, has just finished its first harvest at its facility near Cremona.

“It was a good crop. We have seven different strains. The buds look good,” said C.E.O Terry Booth.

Tiny marijuana seedlings sit in pots at Alberta's first official medicinal grow operation in Cremona.

The federal government is no longer allowing patients to grow their own supply. The only legal way to access medical cannabis is to get it by courier, from licensed commercial operators.

Medical marijuana facility hits roadblock

A business proposal in the Rural Municipality of Wilton is facing an uncertain future after pulling a development application.

Agro Greens Natural Products Ltd is the company behind the proposal, and are currently seeking a new location for their proposed medical marijuana facility. The business owners had a chance to present their idea to Wilton residents at a meeting back in May, and were met with a list of concerns from area residents. After that meeting, the application was left to the RM council to decide upon.

However, council was left without an application to consider after the proposal was pulled.

Hemp nanosheets could be better than graphene for making the ideal supercapacitor

As hemp makes a comeback in the U.S. after a decades-long ban on its cultivation, scientists are reporting that fibers from the plant can pack as much energy and power as graphene, long-touted as the model material for supercapacitors, according to David Mitlin, Ph.D.

Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that have huge potential to transform the way future electronics are powered. Unlike today’s rechargeable batteries, which sip up energy over several hours, supercapacitors can charge and discharge within seconds. But they normally can’t store nearly as much energy as batteries, an important property known as energy density.

Calgary council debates regulating medicinal marijuana agencies

Calgary council has demanded rules in place to limit and regulate medical marijuana businesses, for fear a bout of reefer madness may break out in a city that has a single counselling clinic that cannot dispense the drug.

That one outlet, 420 Clinic, has recently opened in Inglewood, to limited community alarm.

Councillors like Diane Colley-Urquhart have looked anxiously to Vancouver, where 100 illegal dispensaries have sprung up and prompted that city to hurry with regulations for zoning and licensing.

Calgary council unanimously called Tuesday for some set of zoning rules to prevent clustering of marijuana service shops or locating them near schools.

Inside dope on plans for Edmonton's first medical marijuana grow-op

A new kind of green economy could soon take root in Edmonton, if the city's first medical marijuana grow-op gets final approval.

A company called Alberta Green Biotech is behind the project, planned for a northwest industrial park.

The company is still waiting for a development permit, and said once that gets approved they plan to spend $4 million to $6 million to build a 125,000-square-foot facility.

From the outside it would look like any other warehouse. But inside, there will be 12 rooms called grow-pods: each big enough to generate $1.8 to million to $2 million worth of marijuana a year.

The company picked Edmonton because there is no medical marijuana facility in Alberta.

RCMP concerned plan to cultivate opium poppies will attract criminals

OTTAWA -- The RCMP has voiced concerns to Health Canada about an Alberta company's plans to cultivate opium poppies over fears the medicinal project could attract drug-peddling criminals.

Lethbridge-based API Labs Inc. says it understands the national police force's worries, but insists the risk of criminal involvement can be managed with the proper precautions.

The national police force expressed its reservations about API Labs' activities during a conference call with several other federal agencies -- including Public Safety, the Privy Council Office and Health Canada -- in April last year, an internal RCMP briefing note reveals.
