'For our love of dagga we go to court'

The "Dagga Couple" Myrtle Clarke and Jules Stobbs fight for legislation of recreational use. (Delwyn Verasamy)

The media dubbed them the “Dagga Couple”, but Myrtle Clarke and Jules Stobbs have made the name their own, proudly carrying on a campaign to have the recreational use of dagga legalised in South Africa.

Nomenclature is important to them. They’re not fighting for marijuana (“Americanism”, says Jules) or hemp (“industrial cannabis”) or medical marijuana (“it confuses the real value of the plant”) or dope (“a 1950s propaganda word”), but dagga, cannabis or zol (“good local names for a great local plant”).

Activist Q & A | Finn Hemingway Of Feed The Birds - The High Community (THC)

What happens when cannabis plants start sprouting up like wildfire? You take a stroll through the park, there it is! Walk past the houses of parliament, by god! You lay down in your bed ready to sleep, OK this is getting weird now!

You can’t enforce a law for a plant that is literally everywhere.

But by giving out seeds by the thousands, and people dropping cannabis seeds or bird feed in fertile patches of soil, Feed The Birds are starting somewhat of a cannabis revolution.

And because the plant is so persistent, so versatile and so naturally occurring, police are having a run for their money.  Where they uproot five plants, another 50 are growing somewhere.

Tasmania mooted as growing site for medicinal cannabis

The bid to legalise cannabis for medical use is gaining momentum, and Tasmania has been suggested as a growing site.

A cross-party delegation from New South Wales will be in Tasmania next week for a site visit and will meet the state Health Minister.

NSW MP Kevin Anderson, who is working on a private member's bill to legalise medicinal cannabis for the terminally ill in that state, will lead the delegation.

Tasman Health Cannabinoids, a private company, is proposing trials to grow medical cannabis after conducting extensive tests in partnership with the University of Tasmania.

Medicinal cannabis is being touted as a crop that would complement Tasmania's lucrative poppy harvest.

Man Sentenced to Death After UN Calls for Vietnam to Intensify Drug War

Australian citizen, Pham Trung Dung, has been sentenced to death by a court in Vietnam – a nation with one of the harshest drug laws in the world – for attempting to smuggle heroin out of the country. The sentence came just one day after Yury Fedotov, the executive director of the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), urged the Vietnamese government to further tackle “the manufacture, trafficking, and abuse” of certain drugs. The Southeast Asian state, a primary location on the route of the region’s drug traffickers, currently has more than 700 convicts awaiting execution, and has handed down the death penalty to over 30 drug smugglers in the past six months.
