Startups Hoping to Cash in on Marijuana

It’s called the “Green Rush.”

That’s the name given to the flood of investment into marijuana startups.

In California, new companies are trying to corner different parts of the medical marijuana market, hoping to position themselves for widespread legalization. Delivery is one hot spot for competition.  Companies are jockeying to become the “Uber” of pot.

I’m sitting with Kat Ilera in her apartment, waiting for a delivery of medical marijuana.

Ilera uses medical marijuana to cope with pain and anxiety. She was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer last fall. It quickly metastasized to her liver and spine. On Thanksgiving she got surgery on her back, which left her fairly immobile.

Marijuana Study Counter Gateway Theory

HealthDay News -- Marijuana may not be the "gateway drug" some believe it to be, a new study contends.

Instead, teens smoke pot for very specific reasons, and it is those reasons that appear to prompt their decision to try other drugs, researchers report.

For example, kids who use marijuana because they are bored are more likely to also use cocaine, while kids using pot to achieve insight or understanding are more likely to try magic mushrooms, according to findings published recently in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse.

Legal Highs: Welcome to the Cannabis Revolution

Ms Zeng speaks quietly, almost in a whisper, with a strong Chinese accent. How long have you been having trouble sleeping, she asks her customer.

Maybe a few weeks, he replies. Ms Zeng asks if he feels that cannabis helps him fall asleep. "Definitely," he replies. The non-medical practitioner then gives him what she gives all her patients, regardless of their symptoms: a prescription for medical marijuana.

Kenya: Students lecture cops on bhang smoking

They say boys will always be boys. As students from various colleges were busy showing their rugby talents on the pitch at Kenyatta Stadium, some were on a smoking spree. Police officers in Machakos caught a group of college students having a moment of 'one stone.' The police were however shocked by the calm exhibited by the young marijuana smokers. Believe it or not, the boys confessed their sins and then proceeded to 'educate' the cops on the Rastafarian culture. "I and I Rasta says dat herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction. So mister officer, when you smoke the herb, it reveals you to yourself," one of the college boys told the cops. The officers simply confiscated the banned drug and let the boys be.

7 Ways Pot Makes You a Better Parent

Let’s face it: Parenting is not an easy task. As a working mother, a typical day for me begins at 5 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m. That’s 17 hours of nonstop work and I know a lot of other parents who are in the same boat.

We all have our survival tactics, some more effective than others. A lot of mommies and daddies choose prescription drugs or alcohol to cope with the everyday hustles and bustles of life – and some turn to cannabis.

When I was forced to temporarily give up marijuana during a recent job hunt, I became irritable, anxious, depressed and sometimes even lost interest in playing with my child.

Marijuana legalisation paying off for Washington

Marijuana sales have brought $70 million of tax to the US state of Washington in the past 12 months.

It has been one year since the US state of Washington legalised the recreational use of marijuana and the change is paying off.

In only one year the state has made $70 million in tax revenue generated from marijuana sales.

In a report released by the Washington State Liquor Control Board the state is recorded as having sold $257 million of cannabis during the past 12 months.

A report filed by the Drug Policy Alliance claimed Washington’s crime levels had dropped dramatically since the legalisation of the drug.

Recreational marijuana was also legalised in Colorado but the state’s tax revenue on the product were lower than expected at $53 million.

How smoking 'weed' has become common among the youth and their celebrity role models

On Friday night, while DJ Abstrakt was thrilling fans at the popular Persia Club at TRM along Thika road, National Environment Management Authority (Nema) officials walked into the venue in the company of police and ordered that the music be put off.

It was a moment of panic as the huge crowd of revellers, mostly university students, watched the officers summon the DJ, before whisking him away.

Rumours broke out that he was spinning under the influence of ‘something’ but Pulse would later establish that his arrest had to do with the Nema licence at the club.

After his arrest, he was locked up at Kamukunji and not even efforts by his friends, who camped outside the station pleading for his release, could get him bailed out.

First Church of Cannabis in Indianapolis uses RFRA in lawsuit over state's marijuana laws

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A pot-smoking church is suing the city of Indianapolis and state of Indiana, claiming laws against possession and use of marijuana infringe on its religious beliefs.

The First Church of Cannabis was formed as a test of Indiana’s new religious objections law. The church filed its lawsuit Wednesday in Marion Circuit Court. The defendants include Gov. Mike Pence and law enforcement officers.

The lawsuit claims church members believe marijuana “brings us closer to ourselves and others.”

There was no marijuana during the church’s first service July 1, which was observed by more than 20 police officers. Local officials had threatened arrests if marijuana was present.
