Alaska: 5 points you need to know about the proposed updates to SB30:

  • Cannabis as a controlled substance: The new bill would undo the work done to remove cannabis as a controlled substance. It also proposes adding cannabis back to the controlled substance list and would create situations where the controlled substances laws would not apply. As pointed out in Dr. Tim Hinterberger’s email, SB30 in its current form “would completely remove marijuana from the Alaska Controlled Substance Act.”

Health Canada licensing of natural remedies 'a joke,' says doctor

Popular over-the-counter remedies, approved by Health Canada as "safe and effective," may be supported by little to no scientific evidence that the products work, an investigation by CBC’s Marketplace reveals.

Canadians spend $2.4 billion a year on natural health products. While some products may have clinical trials or other scientific evidence to support their claims, many do not require any scientific proof, and there’s little way for consumers to tell the difference.

"It's frustrating that the government standards are not protecting the public the way they should be," Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, deputy editor of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ), told Marketplace co-host Erica Johnson.

'Money is first': Why some team doctors may be harming pro athletes

It's no secret that professional sports is big business, but the pressures put on some team doctors to nurse high-priced star players back to health is leading to the over-prescription of drugs and ultimately harming the athletes in the long run, an investigation by the fifth estate reveals.

“I think it’s pretty clear to me, and in talking to people who have been team doctors, that ethically [doctors] want to say, 'We’re there for the player and health is first,' but that’s not the reality of pro sports," says Arthur Caplan, a professor at the Sports and Society Program at New York University.

"The reality of pro sports is winning is first, because money is first.”

Bad dagga, good dagga?

People who use high-potency cannabis (“skunk”) every day are five times more likely to have a schizophrenia-like psychotic episode than those who don’t, according to new research.

People who started using cannabis under the age of 15 year had “modestly, but significantly, increased risk of psychotic disorders”, according to the study,

But people who used low-potency (“hash”) cannabis – even daily – had no increased likelihood of psychotic disorders compared.

This is according to a six-year study conducted in south London, recently published in The Lancet Psychiatry medical journal.

Washington - Senate OKs PTSD as qualifying condition for medical marijuana

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Senate has unanimously passed a measure that adds post-traumatic stress disorder to the list of medical conditions that qualify for medical marijuana.

Senate Bill 5379 passed the chamber Tuesday night and now heads to the House for consideration.

Washington voters approved a medical marijuana law in 1998 that gives doctors the right to recommend - but not prescribe - marijuana for people suffering from cancer and other conditions that cause "intractable pain." In 2012, voters passed a measure allowing the sale of marijuana to adults for recreational use at licensed stores, which started opening last summer. Several measures have been brought forth by lawmakers this year after to address the dual markets.
