The California courts will soon be hearing a case that could turn current federal law against marijuana on its head.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Thousands of people busted in Connecticut for marijuana possession now have the right to get their convictions erased after the state Supreme Court ruled Monday that the violation had been downgraded to the same legal level as a parking ticket.

The 7-0 ruling came in the case of former Manchester and Bolton resident Nicholas Menditto, who had asked for his convictions to be overturned after the Legislature decriminalized possession of small amounts of pot in 2011.

"It's a topic multiple states will have to be facing," said Aaron Romano, Menditto's attorney. "Because marijuana is being decriminalized across the United States, this issue needs to be addressed."

The Reedsport City Council voted to approve taxes on marijuana sales, when those sales become legal, but voters in the city will have to approve those taxes.

Measure 10-136 will appear on the May 19 ballot.

“Before Measure 91 passed,” Reedsport City Manager Jonathan Wright said, “the City Council passed an ordinance that would institute a tax ... 5 percent on medicinal, 10 percent on recreational. Because of the city's charter, as amended in 2010, it cannot be imposed until ratified by a vote of the people.”

Since word of the RCMP letter to close his medical marijuana dispensary went public last week, Bryan Raiser says he has heard nothing but support from the public.

But Raiser says he may be forced to close this week.

“Even people who aren’t big fans of my previous political decisions have come out in huge support,” Raiser said from 99 North Medical Cannabis Dispensary.

“I have fought so many battles in my years and I have never come close to fighting something where I have 100 per cent support of the community,” he said.

Raiser opened on Feb. 16 at 37768 Second Avenue in downtown Squamish.

 Congressman Earl Blumenauer has been a longtime champion of sensible marijuana law reform. As a state legislator in Oregon, he voted to decriminalize personal amounts of marijuana all the way back in 1973. He has been at the forefront of cannabis law reform ever since, even when it wasn’t near as politically popular as it is today. He was very instrumental in the fight to legalize marijuana, even debating the merits of Measure 91 at the Salem City Club against Oregon’s most prominent prohibitionist.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is the most recent organization to recommend the decriminalization and reclassification of cannabis as a less-dangerous drug.

The professional membership organization of 62,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric medical sub-specialists and pediatric surgical specialists, published an update to their 2004 policy statement titled “Legalization of Marijuana: Potential Impact on Youth.”
