Cannabis as a Potential Treatment for Neurodegenerative Diseases

Neurodegenerative diseases effect more than five million people in the United States. Moreover, at least 1 billion people across the globe are battling with one or more neurodegenerative disorders. It is worse than it sounds because many of these diseases can leave patients disabled, unable to think clearly or walk independently. In some instances, these diseases can be fatal.

Over the years, scientists have been studying and researching neurodegenerative diseases. Research areas include potential causes, prevention, and possible treatments.

Some scientists believe cannabis terpenes can help with treating COVID-19

When you smell marijuana, what you’re actually smelling are the terpenes. These organic compounds create aroma in all plants, and each cannabis strain contains its own set of terpenes. This is why your stashes of weed smell different, even if they share the same general perfume.

Similar to cannabinoids like THC and CBD, terpenes bond with a person’s endocannabinoids and deliver therapeutic effects to his or her system.

Will CBD and THC have a future role in fighting viruses and inflammation?

Could marijuana and CBD be helped by a genomic parasite to decrease inflammation and viruses?

Researchers at the CECAD Cluster of Excellence in Aging Research of the University of Cologne, the University of Texas Health Science Center and the Francis Crick Institute in London have made a significant discovery that offers insight into targeting viruses and inflammation alike through identifying a key protein called, ZBP1.

Epilepsy, Cannabis And The Newest Research

It’s now a widely-held and recognized belief that cannabis helps patients with epilepsy maintain a better quality of life and find respite from seizures.

With the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) citing that epilepsy affects over 3.4 million Americans, identifying a key function in the disease’s ability to target certain parts of the body gives researchers key insight into understanding how and why epilepsy occurs.

In a new study published in the Annals of Neurology, researchers found that an autoantibody, which works against the body, seems to be responsible for causing epilepsy in some patients.

CBD for Eczema: Can Cannabidiol Help?

Eczema (also known as dermatitis) is an umbrella term covering several different conditions, all of which result in excess inflammation of the skin.

Since each specific type of eczema can be caused by a variety of different reasons, CBD alone isn’t capable of completely curing eczema.

But, there’s a growing body of work pointing to the fact that CBD works wonders for inflammation, which is the main symptom that all eczemas share.

So, even though CBD probably can’t eliminate the condition, research is showing that it can be utilized to keep the unwanted inflammation at bay.

Let’s check out the studies.

Could Cannabis Heighten A Protein’s Ability To Fight Viruses And Inflammation?

With the anti-inflammation properties of CBD and marijuana, it’s only a matter of time before scientists start experimenting with THC’s effects on the body and its genomes.

Could marijuana and CBD be helped by a genomic parasite to decrease inflammation and viruses?

Trial And Error: Cannabis And The Big Four Sports Leagues

It seems likely that cannabis will end up like alcohol, only monitored for actual abuse with corresponding treatment options and monetary fines depending on number of offenses.

Anyone who knows me knows that I really enjoy sports of all kinds. I was a college soccer player and played competitive club soccer in Florida before that from the age of 7 onward (and I now play in an adult co-ed league in Los Angeles). Unfortunately, COVID-19 has put the damper on watching live professional sports on TV, and clearly no one can attend any sporting events right now or likely anytime soon. Pro athletes have time on their hands now to train and/or rest up accordingly, which got me to thinking about our pro leagues’ treatment of cannabis and how it has evolved over recent years.

Parents are asking doctors to prescribe cannabis for their kids

Most Canadian pediatricians are shying away from medical cannabis for patients, knowing that it can hurt the developing brain and that there isn’t much research to guide them.

But physicians say they are getting increasing requests for cannabis from parents, for a growing list of conditions.

Dr. Adam Rapoport, medical director of the pediatric palliative care team at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, says, “This is mostly driven by parents, and doctors have fallen behind.”

Lauren Kelly agrees. “It’s happening and we’re playing catch-up.”

Ontario residents bracing for mental health crisis triggered by COVID-19, poll suggests

A new poll from one of Canada’s leading mental health organizations says Ontario residents are bracing for a mental health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The survey from the Ontario division of the Canadian Mental Health Association is the first in a series of three questionnaires meant to gauge the impact the outbreak and its various ripple effects will have on the way Ontario residents feel and behave.

The majority of the 1,001 respondents to the online poll conducted by Pollara say they fear the effects COVID-19 will have on the national economy, the future for both older and younger generations, personal finances and the well-being of friends and family.
