The marijuana industry's battle against the IRS

Millions of Americans rushed to finish their taxes in the hours just before the midnight deadline Wednesday. But for business-owners in the cannabis industry, a years-long tax battle is far from over.

Supporters of legal marijuana cited tax revenue as big factor in pushing through laws that have allowed medical marijuana sales in 23 states and recreational pot in four. But the businesses that grow and sell marijuana in those states are also staring at a steep federal tax bill, especially when compared with businesses in other industries.

Facing more delays, marijuana patients endure

Four years after Delaware medical marijuana legislation passed, patients are still forced to buy pot illegally.

For Deb McPherson, marijuana is medicine. But purchasing the drug is nothing like buying pain pills or picking up a blood pressure prescription at a local pharmacy.

"It's extremely difficult," said McPherson, 47, of New Castle. "You're asking around everyone you used to know in high school. You're hitting people up on social media."

WHY LEGALISING HASH COULD SAVE EGYPT

As the debate of whether or not hashish should be legalised in Egypt reaches prominence in public discourse, we take a look at the pros of legitimising an indulgence many Egyptians already partake in.

On Sunday we shared the information that Osama Salama, head of the Cairo and Giza Tobacco Traders Association, called for the legalisation of hashish in order to help Egypt’s economy. Instantly the call was met with thousands of supporters, and the likes on the article we published has reached over 29,000, who we assume are people that agree.

Three FAQ About Cannabidiol (CBD)

If you have been paying attention to the political showdown, you should have noticed that marijuana is polling better than candidates for the 2016 election. In a recent article published in The Washington Post, “more than 80 percent of adults in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida support medical marijuana.”

The recent change in the perception of marijuana, in the eyes of the masses, is the result of the growing awareness of the medicinal benefits of products with high CBD levels.

What does “CBD” mean?

Hawaii moves closer to medical marijuana dispensary system

HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Senate has approved a bill to establish a system of medical marijuana dispensaries nearly 15 years after the drug became legal in the state.

The Senate passed the bill Tuesday. The next step is for senators and their colleagues in the House to work out their disagreements on how it should work.

There are about 13,000 patients who use the drug in Hawaii. They're generally left to buy it on the black market or grow it on their own.

The current bill would allow up to one dispensary license to be granted in each county. Each license would cover up to one cultivation site and two dispensing locations.

The medical marijuana dispensaries bill is one of dozens of proposals the Hawaii Legislature is passing ahead of a deadline.

Medical marijuana cultivation ramping up in Latin America

LIMA, Peru — Medical marijuana is winning so much global support that even the United States’ surgeon general approves. Yet it seems somebody had forgotten to tell Latin America, until now.

Chile has begun harvesting what’s thought to be Latin America’s first ever crop of legal medical marijuana.

Plucking and trimming buds from all 425 plants, grown on municipal land in the upmarket Santiago suburb of La Florida, is expected to take about another week. When that’s done, the growers hope to have enough cannabis to treat 200 cancer patients.

National pro-marijuana group leads in Maine money drive

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) -- Maine campaign finance data confirms early reports that a nationally-backed marijuana legalization drive is raising more money than a local organization with the same goal.

The reports said the Committee to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol raised $51,155 between January and the end of March. The group is an effort of the national Marijuana Policy Project. Local group Legalize Maine raised $30,285 in the same period.

Almost all of the money raised by the Committee to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol came from Marijuana Policy Project. Legalize Maine's money came from a variety of Maine donors.

Medical Marijuana: the Myths and Realities

Marijuana, also known as cannabis, has been used for more than 3,000 years for the treatment and management of pain, digestive issues and psychological disorders. Despite the fact that marijuana is thought to be useful for treating several medical conditions and symptoms, there is great debate about its safety and efficacy. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved marijuana for any medical condition, yet a growing number of states are legalizing its use for the treatment and management of certain medical conditions.

Medical marijuana prescription 'gap' challenged

The ability of people to fill medical marijuana prescriptions directly with a government-approved grower, rather than a pharmacist, creates difficulty for physicians trying to keep tabs on a patient, says the registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.

Dr. Ed Schollenberg, registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick, opposes the medical marijuana dispensing system, approved by the federal government, which gives patients a direct route to the approved drug suppliers. (CBC)

"We end up with a gap in the information that's available to us if there's a problem," said Dr. Ed Schollenberg. "And more specifically, a gap in the information that might be available to a physician if there might be a problem."

To the Bitter End: The 9 States Where Marijuana Will Be Legalized Last

We know the end is coming, but pot prohibition is going to have to be undone state by state. Here are the ones least likely to jump on the bandwagon.

Marijuana prohibition in the US is dying, but it isn't going to vanish in one fell swoop. Even if Congress were to repeal federal pot prohibition, state laws criminalizing the plant and its users would still be in effect—at least in some states.

And it's probably a pretty safe bet that Congress isn’t going to act until a good number of states, maybe more than half, have already legalized it. That process is already underway and is likely to gather real momentum by the time election day 2016 is over.
