The Pennsylvania Senate passed a medical marijuana bill 40-7 this week. The GOP-controlled Senate … in Pennsylvania … gave a thumbs-up to medical marijuana. Such a freak occurrence should be roundly cheered by pot activists, no?

Well, that’s not what happened.

Here's a sampling of things that advocates for medical pot said recently about "Senate Bill 3," the medical marijuana bill sponsored by Sen. Daylin Leach and Sen. Mike Folmer:

Justin Trudeau has said he intends to waste no time ending the prohibition of marijuana if he’s elected as the country’s next prime minister later this year.

In a March 15 interview with CKNW, the leader of the Liberal party told Gord MacDonald he would take immediate action to decriminalize the drug.

“Will you bring forth legislation to do that in the first session of Parliament when Justin Trudeau is prime minister?” MacDonald asked.

HALIFAX – Medical marijuana users are calling on Halifax police to stop investigating people who need and use the product.

Bob Dillman injured his back and the medication he was prescribed destroyed his immune system. He says he gets some relief from using cannabis and a strict diet. He had a federal exemption to use cannabis, but it expired in February 2014.

Dillman and his wife were charged with possession of cannabis in early March 2015, but those charges have now been dropped.

That might not be entirely surprising, considering the company’s hippy vibe—but these days cannabis cuisine is about a lot more than hippies baking pot brownies.

CHICAGO (AP) _ A proposal to extend the Illinois medical marijuana pilot program beyond 2017 may soon gain passage in Springfield. That would mean the industry’s prospects could come to rest with Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Rauner has said the program should not be extended until it has been fully evaluated. It’s not clear, however, whether the governor would veto a bill to lengthen the program, or if he could be persuaded.

Marijuana entrepreneurs say they will try to convince Rauner that extra time would translate into a stronger industry and more capital investment. The bill could add almost two years to the program.

The Department of Public Health is unveiling changes to the way it issues licenses under the state's medical marijuana dispensary program.

The changes outlined Friday include a revamped application process that allows marijuana dispensaries to be approved similar to how other health care facilities, such as pharmacies, are licensed.

Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel said the changes to the licensing procedures are critical to get the program up and running.

"This change creates a more streamlined, efficient and transparent process that allows the commonwealth to maintain the highest standards of both public safety and accessibility," Bharel said in a written statement.

A Florida advocate of legalizing marijuana says a threat prompted him to withdraw his offer to pay supporters of Mississippi's petition drive to gather signatures on petitions for a statewide election.

Jeremy Bufford of Medical Marijuana United in Tampa, Florida, offered in April to pay $1 to $2 for each certified signature.

The Commercial Appeal reports that Bufford says in an email to Mississippi supporters that he decided to withdraw after consulting with law enforcement and attorneys. He did not describe the threat.

He did not immediately respond to an email Sunday from The Associated Press; the newspaper said he did not return its phone call.

When recreational marijuana became legal in Washington state, people wondered what would happen to medical marijuana dispensaries.

Gov. Jay Inslee answered that question in April, when he signed a law requiring they obtain licenses and join the state regulatory system.

But medical marijuana dispensary owners have more questions about emerging from the shadows, and they’re turning Robert McVay, an attorney with Seattle’s Canna Law Group.

“Some of them are saying, 'Hey, we’ve been spotty on our tax payments, and we want to clean our act up so we have a history of good behavior prior to this licensing process,’” McVay said.

As the once-vilified drug becomes more accepted, researchers around the world are trying to understand how it works and how it might fight disease.

There’s nothing new about cannabis, of course. It’s been around humankind pretty much forever.

In Siberia charred seeds have been found inside burial mounds dating back to 3000 B.C. The Chinese were using cannabis as a medicine thousands of years ago. Marijuana is deeply American too—as American as George Washington, who grew hemp at Mount Vernon. For most of the country’s history, cannabis was legal, commonly found in tinctures and extracts.
